"William Gairdner, a prominent Canadian author, thinker, and former Olympian, passed away on January 12th, 2024, in Newmarket, Ontario, at the age of 83. Born in 1940 in Oakville, Ontario, Gairdner was famous for his prolific writing on conservative principles and societal issues. He authored several books, including ""The Great Divide: Why Liberals and Conservatives Will Never, Ever Agree"" and ""The Trouble with Canada."" In addition to his literary pursuits, Gairdner was an accomplished athlete, competing as a decathlete in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. A libertarian in economic matters and a conservative in social issues, Gairdner founded Civitas, an organization dedicated to promoting the principles of a free and ordered society. Candice Malcolm, editor-in-chief of True North and a past president of Civitas, praised Gairdner's life and legacy, highlighting his influence as a modern Canadian and his commitment to traditional values. His wife Jean, whom he married in 1979, as well as his five children and sixteen grandchildren, mourn Gairdner’s passing. Malcolm described his death as a loss for Canada, remembering him as a pillar of the community and a model Canadian. In his final days, Gairdner continued to contribute to public discourse through blog posts, videos, and columns, leaving behind a legacy of intellectual rigor and dedication to his principles. "
