Joe Hicks passed away on December 2nd, 2023, at his Charlottesville home at the age of 91. He was born in Ivy, Virginia, in 1932. Joe's early years on Decca Farm during the challenging 1930s instilled in him a strong work ethic and values. He fondly recalled the family's self-sufficiency, providing almost everything they needed. Joe's love for baseball began as a boy practicing with a makeshift bat on the family farm. He excelled in high school and later played for the University of Virginia on an academic scholarship. The Chicago White Sox scouted him. Following a stint in the Army in Germany, where he played for the all-Army team. Joe pursued a successful career in minor and major league baseball, retiring in 1966. In 2023, the UVA Baseball Hall of Fame inducted Joee. Beyond his baseball achievements, he served as the Director of Athletics for Charlottesville Parks and Recreation for 28 years. Joe, an expert in baseball rules, conducted clinics across Virginia for coaches and umpires. Joe's dedication extended to his family and wife, Toni, whom he married in 1958. Survived by Toni, three daughters, seven grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Joe Hicks is remembered as a true Virginia Gentleman who leaves behind a legacy of hard work, passion for baseball, and love for family.
