Rod Sherman, a legendary figure in USC football history, passed away on February 6, 2024, in Pasadena, California, due to natural causes. He was 79. A three-year letterman wideout from 1964 to 1966, Sherman etched his name in Trojan lore with a historic touchdown catch in 1964. His fourth-down 15-yard reception from Craig Fertig against unbeaten Notre Dame led USC to a stunning comeback, overcoming a 17-point deficit and securing a memorable 20-17 victory. Sherman, suggesting the play on the sideline, displayed both strategic prowess and athleticism. Captain of the 1966 Trojan team, Sherman earned All-Conference first team honors that season, culminating a remarkable USC career where he caught 90 passes. Following his collegiate success, he embarked on a seven-year NFL journey, contributing to the Oakland Raiders' AFL Championship in his rookie season and playing in Super Bowl II in 1968. Post-football, Sherman transitioned into sports executive roles and founded football fantasy camps. A Pasadena native, he attended Muir High, UCLA, and Pasadena City College before making his mark at USC. Recognized for his contributions, Sherman was inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018 and the California Community College Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Rod Sherman is survived by his son, Eric, daughter, Cindi, and four stepsons, Ronnie, Michael, Aaron, and RJ. His legacy as a Trojan icon and a distinguished NFL player will forever be cherished.
