John Brooks Slaughter, born March 16th, 1934, in Topeka, Kansas, passed away on December 6, 2023. He passed away at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, California, due to a stroke. An influential figure in academia. Slaughter served as the 11th president of Occidental College, contributing significantly to the institution's growth and prominence. Slaughter, an electrical engineer with degrees from Kansas State University and UCLA, embarked on a distinguished career. He joined General Dynamics Astronautics in 1956. And later became the director of the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington. In 1980, Slaughter made history as the first African-American director of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Subsequently, he served as the chancellor of the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1988, he took on the presidency of Occidental College. Under his leadership, Occidental experienced a surge in student achievements, winning prestigious awards and scholarships. After retiring from Occidental in 1999, Slaughter continued his dedication to education. Thus serving as the president and CEO of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME). In 2010, he returned to USC as a professor of education and engineering until his retirement in 2022. Slaughter is survived by his wife, Dr. Bernice Slaughter, son John II, and daughter Jacqueline. Occidental College honored his memory by flying its flag at half-staff from December 11-15, 2023.
