Born in Chapel Hill in May 1956, Adaora was an extraordinary woman whose impact reverberated globally. Adaora, the Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was a pioneering physician epidemiologist. Her illustrious career was dedicated to unraveling and addressing the racial and gender disparities exacerbated by the HIV epidemic. A compassionate clinician, Adaora provided unwavering care to her patients. A trailblazer in academia, she achieved the historic feat of becoming the first Black woman to attain tenure within UNC's Department of Medicine. Adaora's scholarly contributions illuminated the epidemiology of HIV, emphasizing the social forces influencing infectious disease risks. Her work explored the role of sexual network patterns, the impact of incarceration on HIV among Black Americans, and the intricate connection between structural factors and health outcomes. A tireless advocate for women's health, Adaora chaired the NIH HIV Prevention Trials Network Women at Risk Committee and led influential studies. Her leadership extended to advisory roles on prestigious bodies like the Presidential Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS and the National Institutes of Health Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council. Despite international acclaim and numerous awards, including induction into the National Academy of Medicine, Adaora remained humble and generous. Her mentorship touched lives globally, fostering the careers of students and colleagues. Adaora's legacy extends beyond academia; she was a refined woman with a love for family, life, justice, and a good sense of humor. Adaora is survived by her loving children, Alegro Nwanneka Adimora Godley and Bria Adimora Godley, who will forever cherish the memory of their mother and best friend. The Chapel Hill community and the global medical fraternity join together in mourning the loss of an exceptional individual whose impact will endure through the countless lives she touched.
Eric Montross

Eric Montross, ex-basketball player for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and NBA, passed away on December 17th, 2023. He passed away peacefully at his Chapel Hill home after battling cancer since March. Surrounded by family, including his wife and children, Montross faced his illness with determination and grace, supported by the love of many. Playing under Coach Dean Smith from 1990-94, Montross was a key player in the Tar Heels' 1993 NCAA championship. He earned accolades such as first-team All-ACC in 1993 and All-America team membership. After being a first-round draft pick for the Boston Celtics, he enjoyed a nine-season NBA career. Montross later contributed to UNC as a Tar Heel Sports Network analyst for 18 seasons. Then, he served as a senior major gifts director at the Rams Club. Carolina Athletics expressed profound sadness at Montross's untimely passing. Highlighting his impact beyond the basketball court. He was recognized for his faith, family values, and community contributions. Montross supported scholarship efforts and enriched the Tar Heel Sports Network with his insight. Moreover, he championed cancer research through the Lineberger Center. The university extended condolences to Laura, his children, family, colleagues, and friends. Thus acknowledging the immeasurable love and influence Montross had on countless lives.
