Joel Fleishman's prominence as a professional in philanthropy was only the most public side of a person whose massive network of friends is in high places. He possessed many fund-raising talents and a great understanding of subjects such as fine wine and classical music. All of this made him an unmatched influencer among the nation's powerful and wealthy people. He took his last breath in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Monday at the age of 90. His close friend, Adam Abram, reported his demise to be due to the complications of a fall. Mr. Fleishman was best known as a fantastic scholar in the field of philanthropy studies. He was counted among the first ones to insist that the building blocks can and must measure the influence of their giving. He wrote a book in 2007, "The Foundation: A Great American Secret," which assisted in catalyzing a wave of alterations in the manner private philanthropies operate. It displayed both that they often failed to achieve their promise and that they were integral to progress. Apart from the great things he did in his life, his informal role as a networker and mentor left a huge impact on the world. He was a member of that assemblage whose people's willingness and skills to stay in the background are vital to the flow of talent into the upper reaches of government and business. Mr. Fleishman taught his final class in 2023, bringing his five-decade teaching career to an end. We are deeply sad for this immense loss. His sister - Harriet Wolff, survives him.
