Cissy Houston, a Grammy-winning gospel soul and artiste popular for her deep faith and powerful voice, breathed her last in her home in New Jersey. She was 91 of age and has been under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease. Miss Houston passed away surrounded by her loved ones in her last moments. Born in 1933, she was motivated by her father “Nicholas Drinkard” to sing and perform in church. Houston was raised under the Methodist Episcopal denomination of Christianity, then later became Minister of Sacred Music at New Hope Baptist Church. Later on, Cissy sang backing vocals with Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Van Morrison, and a lot more. She was also a well-known solo gospel singer and the mother of one of the most renowned R&B and pop stars across the globe - Whitney Houston. Cissy started her musical career as a member of the family group “The Drinkard Singers.” This group included her siblings: Nick, Anne, and Larry. In 1958, the group went on to release the album “A Joyful Noise” on “RCA Records.” They became one of the first gospel groups to have an album that got released on a major label. She recorded hundreds of songs throughout the genres, with her vocals included on tracks by major stars from Jimi Hendrix to Beyonce. The world will not only miss her amazing voice, but also her kind and endearing spirit.
