"Herbert C. Klein, a prominent North Jersey political figure and former Democratic congressman, passed away at 93. Democrats, including Representative Bill Pascrell Jr. and Representative Josh Gottheimer, remembered Klein. Not just as a superb public servant but an advocate for Passaic County. Governor Phil Murphy and his wife, Tammy, called Klein their dear friend. They went on to acknowledge his dedication to public service, from the U.S. Air Force to Congress. Klein's significant legislative contribution was his involvement in crafting the Riegle-Neal Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act of 1994. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Klein had a diverse career. He won a seat in the New Jersey General Assembly in 1971. Then, he went on to write laws for the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. After a brief congressional tenure from 1992 to 1994, he remained active in public affairs. Being a Rutgers alumnus, Klein contributed to the university, serving on the board of trustees. He then made a substantial donation in 2020 to a dementia research center. His wife, Jacqueline, passed away in 2017 after battling Alzheimer's disease. Klein's legacy includes his impact on New Jersey politics, his legislative achievements, and his commitment to public service and education. "
