Dr. Cheryl Ann Palm passed away on January 24th, 2024, in Falmouth, Massachusetts. She died due to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, an uncommon and incurable prion ailment affecting a small number of individuals annually in the U.S. Cheryl, affectionately known as ""Annie"" in her youth, was born on January 6th, 1954, in Marysville, California, to Ralph Leslie Palm and Marjorie Mather Palm. Armed with a master's degree in Zoology from UC Davis, Cheryl ventured to Borneo to study orangutans before joining The Ecosystems Center at the Marine Biological Lab as a research assistant from 1979 to 1983. In 1990, she wed Dr. Pedro Sanchez, and together they dedicated themselves to enhancing soil health and reducing hunger globally, residing in Peru and Kenya for periods. Cheryl's legacy extends beyond her scientific contributions; she is celebrated for her friendly, insightful, and charitable demeanor. Her mentorship, particularly to women in STEM fields, left a profound impact. She leaves behind a wide circle of devoted friends, colleagues, and students who cherished her dearly. Her husband, Pedro, her brothers, Steve and Leslie Palm, Leslie's wife Suzanne, her three stepchildren, Jennifer (and Jamie), Evan (and Mireille), and Juliana (and Rob), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, grandnephews, grandnieces, and her cherished dogs, Chica and Pancho survive her. Her absence will be deeply felt, but her memory will forever be cherished.
