William Frederick Gardner, a legend in both the world of baseball and the hearts of his family, peacefully departed this world on January 3, 2024, at home, surrounded by loved ones. Born on July 19, 1927, in New London, Connecticut, to Leslie Gardner and Eva Maynard, his remarkable journey unfolded as a natural athlete at Chapman Tech. In 1952, William married the love of his life, Barbara Carnaroli, and they shared an incredible union that spanned 71 years. At the tender age of 17, he showcased his athletic prowess, signing with the NY Giants in 1944. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1946, he returned to baseball in 1947. His career included several years in the Giants Minor League system, with a pinnacle in 1954 when the NY Giants clinched the World Series. Transcending to the Orioles in 1956, William Gardner achieved his career zenith. Leading the American League in double plays and doubles in 1957, he earned the Orioles MVP that year. A key player in the 1961 Yankees World Series team, he left an indelible mark on Major League Baseball. Fondly known as "Slick" for his exceptional double play skills, he was a beacon of talent. Beyond his playing years, William dedicated over 30 years to scouting, coaching, and managing in both Minors and Majors, including leadership roles with the Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals. His legacy lives on through his beloved wife, Barbara, and their four children, Thomas Gardner, Gwen (Bob) Lakowsky, Shelly (Rick) Kraetz, and Billy Gardner Jr. (Kristie). William cherished moments with his ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of love, sportsmanship, and family bonds that will endure through the ages.
