"Edward E. Crutchfield Sr. was a beloved figure known for his leadership in banking, philanthropy, and civic engagement. He passed away peacefully at his home in Vero Beach, Florida, on January 2nd, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on July 14th, 1941, in Dearborn, Michigan, Ed grew up in Albemarle, North Carolina. His passion for football earned him a scholarship to Davidson College. After earning his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, he embarked on a distinguished career in banking. Joining First Union Bank in 1965, Ed rose through the ranks to become the youngest bank president in the country. Under his leadership, First Union experienced unprecedented growth, expanding its assets to $253 billion by the time of his retirement in 2000. Beyond the banking sector, Ed was deeply committed to philanthropy and civic causes. He championed educational initiatives, literacy programs, and organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America and Habitat For Humanity. His leadership extended to numerous corporate boards and organizations dedicated to advancing the financial services industry. Following his retirement, Ed established foundations to support charitable giving and educational opportunities for students across North Carolina. Remembered for his humor, generosity, intellect, and wisdom, Ed Crutchfield’s family, friends, and community will miss the legacy of service and impact he leaves behind. "
