His passion for football earned him a scholarship to Davidson College. After earning his MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, he embarked on a distinguished career in banking. Joining First Union Bank in 1965, Ed rose through the ranks to become the youngest bank president in the country. Under his leadership, First Union experienced unprecedented growth, expanding its assets to $253 billion by the time of his retirement in 2000. Beyond the banking sector, Ed was deeply committed to philanthropy and civic causes. He championed educational initiatives, literacy programs, and organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America and Habitat For Humanity.
