Fay Vincent, the MLB commissioner who served in a tough era, tragically passed away at the age of 86. The reason for his demise is reported to be some complications of bladder cancer. He shaped the sports industry during some of its most challenging years, which included labor strife, the delay of the 1989 World Series due to an earthquake in San Francisco and Oakland, and the negotiation of Pete Rose's lifetime ban. Born in Waterbury in 1938, Vincent has aced many roles as a securities regulator, lawyer, and sports executive. However, he is commonly known for his time as the eighth commissioner of baseball from 1989 to 1992. During his time as a commissioner, Vincent played a vital role in making sure that the 1989 World Series responsibly resumed after the disaster. He also oversaw important expansions in Major League Baseball, including the 1993 National League expansion. Apart from his executive work, he was a dedicated advocate for baseball, popularly chairing the 2006 special committee that had 17 players from the Negro Leagues into the Baseball Hall of Fame. His commitment to preserving the history of sports and pushing for inclusivity helped define his time in office. Even though his time as MLB commissioner was cut short, he took pride in his associations with the game, mostly reflecting on his role in molding the modern landscape of baseball. Fans, players, and colleagues alike cheer upon his contributions to the sport, making sure he always has his place in baseball history. In 1998, Fay married Christina Clarke Watkins. His wife survives him, as do his children, Anne Vincent and Edward and William Vincent (his twins); three stepchildren, Nilla, Ned, and Jake Watkins; his sisters, Barbara Vincent and Dr. Joanna Vincent; and several grandchildren.
