Brenda Alston Norfolk March 5, 1946 - August 3, 2024 Brenda Alston Norfolk, a beloved member of our community, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the age of 78. Born on March 5, 1946, in Norfolk, Virginia, she was the daughter of Charles and Maria Alston. Brenda was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of those around her with her gentle spirit and kind heart. Her warmth and generosity were evident in everything she did, making her a cherished friend and an adored member of her family. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brenda Alston on August 3, 2024, at the age of 78. She was born on March 5, 1946, in Norfolk City, Virginia, United States to Charles and Maria Alston. Brenda was the beloved wife of William Alston for 48 years. Brenda and William were blessed with seven children: Charles Jr, Maria (spouse James), Robert (spouse Lisa), Sandra, Brittany (spouse William), Nicole, and Nikita. She was also a loving grandmother to 10 grandchildren. Brenda and William were blessed with 14 grandchildren: Alexis Alston, Bernard Alston, Shante Alston, Latrice Alston, Renee Alston, Lisa Alston, Tyneesha Alston, Jacob Alston, Crystal Alston, Angel Alston, Eric Alston, Michael Alston, Brad Alston, Ivory Alston. She was also a loving Great grandmother to 24 great grandchildren Brenda worked as an LPN until her retirement in 1988. She was known for her dedication and compassion in caring for others. In her free time, Brenda enjoyed dancing, running, walking, and practicing yoga. On August 3, 2024, Brenda Alston passed away from a sudden heart attack. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Throughout her life, Brenda Alston embraced various passions and hobbies, including dancing, reading, yoga, and running. These activities not only brought her great joy, but also allowed her to maintain a vibrant and healthy lifestyle. Professionally, Brenda dedicated herself to the field of healthcare. She worked as an LPN for Virginia Beach, where she provided compassionate care to those in need. Paul Webb was an influential basketball coach. He was famous for leading Old Dominion to a 22-game winning streak in its debut Division I season (1976-77). Webb passed away on December 8th, 2023, at his Virginia Beach home at the age of 94. Webb's coaching legacy at Old Dominion spanned a decade. During this, he achieved four NCAA tournament appearances and five National Invitation Tournament (NIT) berths. In the 1976-77 season, the Monarchs, under his guidance, boasted a 25-4 record. Defeating prominent teams like Mississippi State, Georgetown, and Virginia. Despite missing the NCAA tournament, they made a significant impact in the ECAC championship game against Syracuse. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, in 1929, Webb graduated from Petersburg High School and the College of William and Mary. He transitioned to coaching after his playing days and spent 19 years at Randolph-Macon. Before joining Old Dominion in 1975. Webb's calm demeanor and ethical coaching style left a lasting impression on many players. Including Kenny Gattison, who fondly remembered Webb as not just a coach but the ""best human being"" he had ever known. Webb's contribution to ODU basketball is reflected in 511 career victories. This earned him a revered place in the program's history. His impact on and off the court resonates, making it challenging to separate thoughts of ODU basketball from his legacy.
