Laura Lynch, a founding member of the iconic Dixie Chicks, now known as The Chicks, tragically passed away at the age of 65 in a car accident on December 22, 2023, in El Paso, Texas. Born on November 15, 1931, in Dell City, Texas, Laura played a vital role as the bassist and vocalist in the influential all-women country music band from its inception in 1989. Her infectious energy and humor were instrumental in shaping the band's early days. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed Laura's death, stating that her car, a 2016 Ford F-150, was struck head-on while traveling eastbound on US 62. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Members of The Chicks, Emily Strayer, Martie Maguire, and Natalie Maines, expressed shock and sadness, remembering Laura as a bright light whose energy sparked the band's early days.
