Mike Ilitch, the founder of today's largest carryout pizza chain and the owner of the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings, passed away on this day 8 years ago. Ilitch, whose first job was cleaning vehicles in used car lots, seemed to imitate the plot of a tale written by Horatio Alger. In addition to founding the "Little Caesars" pizza chain, he owned the Red Wings, Fox Theatre, and Tigers and operated city-owned Cobo, Joe Louis, and Little Caesars arenas among smaller businesses, restaurants, and teams. His life was indeed a fascinating American success story. Born in 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, Mike attended Clinton Elementary, Post Intermediate, and Cooley High School, where he was an All-City athlete in track and baseball. It was his success that brought him and his family remarkable wealth. The 2016 Forbes Magazine compilation of the 400 richest Americans listed him and his wife at No. 88, having a net worth of $5.4 billion. However, for Mike, perhaps, a different set of statistics was more important: four Stanley Cup championships for his Red Wings, a huge number of trophies for individual and team player achievements, as well as two trips to the World Series for his Detroit Tigers. His wife and business partner, Marian, along with their seven children, survive him.
