"Guy Benton Johnson Jr. was an esteemed American sociologist and professor emeritus at the University of Oregon. He passed away on January 8th, 2024, in Eugene, Oregon. He was 95 years old. He was born on August 19th, 1928, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Johnson was the son of Guy Benton Johnson and Guion Griffis Johnson, both prominent figures in sociology and history. He married Miriam Massey in 1951, and they had two children together. Miriam also pursued a successful career in sociology, focusing on family issues and gender roles. Johnson earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later obtained a doctorate in Sociology from Harvard University in 1954, studying under the renowned Talcott Parsons. Throughout his academic career, Johnson made significant contributions to the field of sociology, particularly in the study of religious movements. He served as the Editor of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion and held leadership positions in various academic organizations related to sociology and religion. In 1994, Johnson received the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion's annual book award for his co-written work on ""Vanishing Boundaries: the Religion of Protestant Baby Boomers."" His colleagues and students will remember and cherish Johnson's legacy as a scholar and leader in sociology. "
