A longtime Cleveland sports journalist - Dan Coughlin, renowned for his exceptional work on TV and in print, passes away. Dan Coughlin took his last breaths peacefully at his home in Rocky River, Ohio, at the age of 86. He was a beloved husband of the late Madelyn Louise and father of four loving children. Moreover, he was also a loving grandfather of 15 children. Apart from them, he was also a proud uncle to many nephews and nieces. He was born to Ruth Strain and Arthur Coughlin in 1938 in the Collinwood neighborhood. He grew up in Lakewood and was raised in a family in Rocky River. Dan completed his early education at St. Edward High School and got his degree from the University of Notre Dame. Later, Dan served two years in the U.S. Army. He became a sports journalist whose career spanned about seven decades, beginning with “The Plain Dealer.” Then, he served as a broadcaster for WJW Channel 8 for 40 years. Dan’s recognitions revolve around the “Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame.” the “St. Edward High School Athletic Hall of Fame,” and the “Press Club of Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame.” Mr. Coughlin also won an Emmy and was named Ohio Sportswriter of the Year twice in his career. He served and supported heaps of community organizations with his unmatchable talent and efforts. Dan traveled along with the Indians as well as the Browns and covered some of the hugest college football games of the 20th century, including five major bowl games. He was also present at the ringside for various world championship fights, as well as the Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali series. He will be missed for his jaw-dropping writings and his compassionate spirit.
