39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter dies at the age of 100 after spending more than a year in hospice care. The only Georgian who ever occupied the White House, Carter, turned 100 on October 1. He was the longest-lived president in the U.S. history. President Carter and former lady Rosalynn Carter were most cherished residents of Plains, a small town in Georgia, where the couple grew up. Their affection for each other never seemed to dwindle in their 77-year marriage; Rosalynn Carter died on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96. The couple was officially the longest-married presidential couple, marking their 26,765 days together. Their marriage spanned Carter's ever-changing career, from peanut farmer to state senator, then governor, and president. He also served his post-White House roles as a volunteer, humanitarian, and diplomat. Carter's devotion to his family, faith, and country, as well as his passion for helping others, gathered praise from many political leaders. He was also a prolific author who was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for a memoir he penned about growing up on a Georgian farm in the rural South right after the Great Depression and prior to the civil rights movement. He received a Grammy three times for his audiobooks and got nominated another nine times. Carter overcame brain cancer in 2015, along with multiple accidents in recent years. The Atlanta-based Carter Center reported on February 18, 2023, that Jimmy Carter had decided to enter hospice care and spend his remaining time with his family.
