Mars Williams, the accomplished American saxophone player, has passed away at the age of 68 due to ampullary cancer, leaving behind a legacy that reverberates through various musical genres. Known for his significant contributions to the Waitresses and the Psychedelic Furs, Williams' saxophone played a pivotal role in defining the unique sound of both bands. His tenure with the Waitresses showcased his prowess on tracks like "Christmas Wrapping" and "I Know What Boys Like." Joining the Psychedelic Furs in 1983 as a temporary replacement, Williams became an integral part of the band until 1989. He later rejoined them in 2005, continuing until their last tour in October of the previous year. While recognized for his rock contributions, Williams' primary domain was jazz, collaborating with experimental bands and earning praise from legendary musician John Zorn. Described as a "true saxophone player," Williams' passion and excitement infused every note he played. His diverse career included collaborations with Power Station, Ministry, anad Billy Idol, showcasing his versatility across genres.
