George Foreman
Jan 09, 1949 - Mar 20, 2025
Houston, TX
The boxing legend George Foreman, also known as Big George, passed away at 76. George Foreman, the oldest heavyweight boxing champion in history, died on Friday night in Houston. He extended his fame and his sociable personality into a multimillion-dollar grill business. George had victories, including another one over Frazier. But, in 1977, after losing to Jimmy Young, he elected to call it quits when he was only 28 years of age, stating his mother's wishes and also his religious beliefs. He turned to his religious calling after his retirement by serving as a non-denominational Christian minister in Houston. He also started a youth center. But the ring lured him back; Foreman made his way back to the sport to regain his title at the age of 45. He fought frequently, as many as nine times a year. He got 24 straight wins, and this set him up for a title shot at the age of 42 against Holyfield, the champion, in 1991. He lost the decision but gave a creditable performance. Foreman will always be remembered as a great icon of boxing. He also made his way to a spot among the greatest because of his kind personality. His loving wife, Mary Joan Martelly, and his 11 children survive him.
