Former Alabama athletic director and Vols football coach Bill Battle breathed his last at 82. Born in Birmingham, Bill was a three-year starter for the “Crimson Tide” from 1960 to 1962, who excelled both defense and offense. He started his collegiate career at Alabama, and in 1961, he helped Byant earn his first national title. Battle began his coaching career at Oklahoma, where he received his master’s degree in education in 1964 while working for Bud Wilkinson. Bill was an assistant under Paul Dietzel in the Army during his two-year military tour from 1964 to 1965. He shifted to Tennessee in 1966 and served as an assistant coach for four years. The Birmingham, Alabama native was an innovator who, in 1981, founded the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC). This was where he served as its CEO and president until 2002. He got back to his alma mater in 2013 to work as the director of athletics for four years. Battle was a member of a bunch of hall of fame. In 2008, Bill was the recipient of the National Football Foundation’s Outstanding Contributions to Amateur Football Award. Furthermore, in 2011, he was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a recipient of the Paul W. Bryant Alumni Athlete Award in 2005. We are sad to announce that Bill Battle is no longer with us. However, the noble work he did both on and off the field shines through heaven and earth. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his two sons, Mike and Pat; and two daughters, Kayla and Shannon.
