Mary Lou Houtz November 18, 1930 - June 09, 2024 Mary Lou Houtz, beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 09, 2024, in Bakersfield, California at the age of 93. Mary Lou was born on November 18, 1930, in Havana, Kansas to her loving parents, Clayton Smith and Pauline Bruce Smith. In 1941 her father was killed in a tragic oilfield accident which greatly impacted herself and her two sisters. Witnessing her mother’s perseverance and fortitude as her example, Mary Lou charted her own path towards survival, independence and success in life. Mary Lou's life was filled with significant milestones and cherished memories. She married the love of her life, Hurley Hammans, on October 02, 1948. Through their 20 year union three children were born and would become her first priority for the rest of her life. She instilled in them Love of God, Country, Freedom and Independence as well as a hearty work ethic and propensity to give of ourselves unselfishly in the face of need and stand up against injustice. In 1970, Mary Lou found another love in her life when she married Jim Houtz on May 16, 1970, in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Their marriage brought two families together, and their love provided a strong foundation for their journey through life. After a twenty three year career as a Secretary for Continental Oil Company, in 1973 Mary Lou founded Colonial Realty serving as Owner and Broker for 25 years. Her work ethic, commitment to excellence and professionalism served as an inspiration to those around her and led to a very successful and fulfilling career. Mary Lou's interests and hobbies included traveling and playing Bridge. She had a remarkable sense of adventure, always willing to explore new places and experiences. In 2020, just before COVID; MaryLou and daughter Jyl traveled throughout South America on an Azamara cruise which included Antarctica, thus completing their mutual bucket list goal of visiting all seven continents. In addition to her spouses, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her son Larry Hammans and sisters Anne Stubblefield and Betty Lee Crocker. She is survived by a host of family and friends who will forever cherish her memory. Although Mary Lou's physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit and love will live on through the lives she touched. We will forever cherish the memories of Mary Lou Houtz and the impact she made on our lives. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
