San Diego, CA
Two-time World Series baseball champion – Merv Rettenmund dies at 81. His 13-year major league playing career included World Series titles with the Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles. Rettenmund made his MLB debut with the 1968 Orioles and was a member of Baltimore’s pennant-winning teams from 1969 to 1971. In 1970, Merv and the O’s celebrated a World Series victory, and he homered in the Game 5 clincher vs. the Reds. His death was announced by Dan Diego Padres. However, no cause is known yet. During the 1970 season, Rettenmund hit .322 and had a .938 OPS with 18 home runs prior to earning a few down-ballot votes for American League MVP in 1971, as he produced a .318 average and a .422 on-base percentage. Right after the 1973 campaign, he was traded to Cincinnati and seized his second World Series ring with The Big Red Machine in 1975. In the latter half of his career with the Padres (1976 to 1977) and Angels (1978 to 1980), he became one of the best pinch-hitters in baseball. His 22 pinch-hits for San Diego in 1977 is a club record. In 1989, Merv was the A’s hitting coach when they made their way to the World Series championship, as well as an AL pennant in 1990. However, he spent most of his coaching years in San Diego, first from 1991 to 1999 and then from 2006 to 2007, which were also his final seasons serving as a big league coach. He left behind a legacy of happiness, strength, and awesomeness.
