Virginia Halas McCaskey

Jan 04, 1923 - Feb 05, 2025

The longtime owner of the NFL's Chicago Bears, Virginia Halas McCaskey, passed away at the age of 102. Born in 1923 to George and Min Halas, McCaskey grew up in Chicago and attended Drexel University in Philadelphia. It was here when he met her future husband, Edward W. McCaskey, whom she married in 1943. Even though Virginia didn’t aspire to be the owner of one of the NFL's most popular teams, she has had a close relationship with football ever since she was a child. This was mainly because her father, George Halas, founded and owned the Chicago Bears. However, when Halas died in 1983, the intended heir, George Jr., had already passed on due to a heart attack in 1979. This left the family-owned team for Virginia to inherit. She stepped up and became its owner until her demise. Only two seasons after McCaskey took ownership, the Bears won Super Bowl XX, after a year during which the team positioned itself as one of the most attention-grabbing and dynamic teams in the NFL. They won five consecutive NFC Central titles when she first took charge, a run only interrupted when the franchise faltered in the 1990s. She recently celebrated her 102nd birthday on January 5th. And for her birthday, the team beat the Green Bay Packers 24-22 on a walk-off field goal to finish off the 2024 season. She is survived by her sons Edward Jr., Patrick, Richard, George, Joseph, and Brian, and daughters Anne, Mary, and Ellen. Along with them, her 21 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren also survive her.
