"Emily Eileen Onderko, aged 42, passed away unexpectedly on December 11th, 2023, in Fairview Township, Pennsylvania. She was born on February 21st, 1981, and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. Emily was the daughter of Thomas and Patricia Matson. Emily graduated from Mercyhurst Preparatory School in 1999 and later from La Roche University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her passion for journalism was ignited during an internship with KDKA in Pittsburgh. Returning to Erie, she began her broadcasting career at WJET-TV. Here she spent nearly two decades as a prominent figure at Erie News Now. Emily earned awards for her roles as a producer, reporter, and anchor, covering both local and international news. Colleagues fondly remember her commitment to community reporting and the joy she found in sharing impactful stories. Beyond her professional life, Emily cherished time with her family and close friends, especially her husband, Ryan. They shared adventures, attended concerts, traveled, and enjoyed boating on Lake Erie. Emily also embraced motherhood, raising her children, Kyle and Emily. She recently welcomed Erie Otter's player Matthew Shaefer into their home. Her compassion extended to animals, leading to the adoption of several dogs, chickens, and a cat over the years. In the wake of Emily's passing, those who knew her have reflected on the light and warmth she brought into every space.
