Carlton Pearson, the influential Tulsa megachurch pastor renowned for his bold rejection of the traditional doctrine of hell, passed away at 70 due to complications from cancer, as reported on November 19th, 2023. A one-time Pentecostal preacher and protégé of Oral Roberts, Pearson founded the expansive Higher Dimensions Family Church in Tulsa, peaking at 6,000 members in the 1990s. However, a profound shift in beliefs towards universalism led to the church's decline and closure in the early 2000s, causing Pearson's ostracization within evangelical circles. Despite this, his advocacy for a theology of universal love resonated globally. Pearson's journey was depicted in the 2018 film "Come Sunday," starring Martin Sheen and Chiwetel Ejiofor. After setbacks, Pearson found solace in progressive Christian circles, serving as a minister in the United Church of Christ. His complex legacy challenges conventional religious narratives, showcasing a man unafraid to evolve, even at the cost of his once-thriving congregation.
