Jym Ganahl

A longtime TV meteorologist, Jym Ganahl, who has been doing weather on TV since he was 17, died at the age of 76. The fact that he passed a day after Groundhog Day, which is undeniably the most famous weather day of the year, is fitting Jym, who was also the most renowned meteorologist in US history. He worked in broadcasting for about 60 years, including his final seven years at ABC 6 prior to retiring. The reason for his demise is reported to be natural causes. He became a part of NBC4, then going by its call letters of WCMH in 1979, and joined the news team that ruled central Ohio airwaves in the 1980s: “Doug, Mona, Jimmy, and Jym” Ganahl alongside Mona Scott, Doug Adair, and the legendary sports anchor Jimmy Crum. He helped to bring on the station's second meteorologist, Ben Gelber, who was a longtime Robin to his Batman. Ganahl delivered his final on-air forecast for NBC4 on September 1, 2016, but he was on staff until July 2017. After a brief retirement, Jym joined WSYX/WTTE in a part-time role, finally stepping down last March. Having a deeper knowledge of weather, including lore, i.e., determining the temperature only by counting the chirps of crickets in a specific amount of time and adding 40 to it, and knowing how every year there would be three flurries of snow after the first forsythia blooms, Jym had a kind spirit and an accurate foresight. All those who had the honor of knowing his humble personality are devastated but taking comfort because they are aware that the man known for his weather folklore is at peace, enjoying the sunshine, snowy fields, and beautiful blue skies wherever he is. His two daughters and seven grandchildren survive him.
