The TV legend "Big Chuck," Schodowski, dies at the age of 90. He was a beloved personality on WJW (Channel 8) for more than 60 years. The cleft-chinned and amiable broadcaster served as an engineer and a bit player on horror host Ernie "Ghoulardi" Anderson's "Shock Theater" program in the 1960s before co-hosting his own shows and working as an Emmy-winning producer and director. Born on June 28, 1934, in Cleveland, Charles Mitchell Schodowski worked the midnight shift at the Alloys & Chemical Corp. foundry after graduating from Cleveland High School in 1952. He was eager to get out of the dangerous and difficult work, so Schodowski started to study broadcasting technology in 1957 at the National Radio School in Cleveland. He attended night classes for three years and got his certification in 1960. Soon, he got a job as a summer replacement engineer at Channel 3, now WKYC, and shifted to Channel 8 that year as a full-time engineer. He married his high school sweetheart, June Kole, in 1956. The couple had five children: Mark, Michael, Marulyn, Michelle, and Melissa. In 2007, Schodowski retired, and in 2008, he wrote a memoir, "Big Chuck." However, in 2011, on Fox 8 and in a web skit show. Big Chuck won a lot of broadcast awards and was received in both the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He left behind a legacy of kindness, bravery, and courage.
