A former Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist for “The Inquirer” - Donald L. Bartlett has died at the age of 88. Donald L. Barlett, an award-winning investigative journalist, exposed many cases of corruption by public officials. Donald, along with his colleague “James B. Steele” at “The Philadelphia Inquirer,” became popular for resourceful, mostly explosive investigative journalism. Moreover, in one instance, he even laid bare how the expanding wage gap and federal tax law were diminishing the nation’s middle class. Unfortunately, Mr. Barlett took his last breath at his home in Philadelphia on October 5, 2024. He was 88 years of age. He passed away due to a series of illnesses. Over four decades, Mr. Steele’s and Mr. Barlett’s investigative abilities, rooted in complex analysis and systematic research of issues and institutions that intensely influence Americans, led to two Pulitzer Prizes for national reporting. The two also researched the origin of the oil crisis at the beginning of the 1970s, injustices in the operations of the Internal Revenue Service, and the dysfunctional U.S. healthcare system. The revelations both of them made would have taken months or even years to produce. However, the constant support from The Inquirer gave them the resources and time that they needed. Moreover, in 1991, Donald's multipart series with his colleague, Mr. Steele, was on the middle class. They attributed its decrease to a gaping gulf in income between the bottom and top wage earners. The series earned a bunch of awards and was expanded into a book titled, “America: What Went Wrong?” (1992). This book sat on top of the New York Times best-seller list for weeks. He was indeed a great writer and an even greater person who will be missed deeply.

He possessed a warm and inviting personality that drew people towards him effortlessly. His beaming smile and kind-hearted nature made him a joy to be around. James had a penchant for making others feel valued, and his compassionate nature allowed him to provide comfort and support to those in need. In addition to his loving wife, James leaves behind a network of family and friends who will cherish his memory forever. He was a beloved son, caring brother, and cherished friend.
