Dr. Norman Frederick Ness, aged 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Venice, FL, on December 4, 2023. Born on April 15, 1933, in Springfield, MA, to Herman Hugo and Eva Carlson Ness, Norman's legacy is marked by a profound contribution to space exploration and an enduring passion for sailing. A distinguished alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Norman joined NASA in 1960, dedicating his career to magnetic field studies in space. He played a pivotal role in landmark missions, from the lunar orbiting Explorer 35 to pioneering discoveries at Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Recognized globally for his expertise, Norman received numerous awards, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1986 and election to the National Academy of Science in 1983. Beyond his scientific endeavors, Norman found solace and joy in sailing, coaching at the U.S. Naval Academy Sailing Squadron in Annapolis, MD. He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife of 52 years, Miroslava Jurancic Ness, his children Elizabeth and Stephen (Melanie) Ness, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
