The first Black secretary of labor, Alexis Herman, gave in to her brief illness at the age of 77. She was a Democratic Party insider who was brought up under segregation in Alabama. Herman went on to become the secretary of labor, a role in which she helped resolve a mind-numbing strike by United Parcel Service workers. Her family announced the news of her untimely passing.
