Richard Gehring

Richard Gehring

Age - 93

November 22, 2023

Richard F. Gehring of Sylvania, OH passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on November 15, 2023, at Kingston of Sylvania. He was born in Toledo, OH on February 21, 1930, to Fred and Esther Gehring. He attended McKinely Elementary and graduated from DeVilbiss High School. He went on to study pre-med at the University of Toledo and then to The Ohio State University for medical school. After completing his residency, he served time in the Air Force at a base in Fairbanks, AK. When he returned in 1959, he started in practice with Dr. Ralph Wickter and then went solo with his own practice in 1976 until he retired in 1995. He was beloved by his patients and was an "old school" physician who took the time to get to know all his patients and took care of generations of families. When he retired the outpouring of love and respect was overwhelming. We still run into people today who tell us that dad was the BEST doctor they ever had and have never encountered another one like him. He met the love of his life, Lavisa Harris, on an elevator at the old Mercy Hospital while completing his internship. She had recently moved here from Oklahoma and was in training to become an x-ray technician. They were married on October 7, 1957, and recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Dick loved to travel and did extensive research on places to stay, restaurants to dine, activities to pursue. He and Lavisa loved their numerous trips abroad to Italy, France, Egypt, and the Caribbean. They also loved their times in Napa Valley, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Chicago. He always sought out restaurants with great wine lists and even greater food--he was a foodie before that term was ever invented. He was also a consummate fly fisherman and traveled many times to Alaska, Montana, and Yellowstone to fish for his favorite trout. Dad had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to regale us with the latest joke he heard. He also had a deep and abiding love for music--specifically classical music. As children, we grew up listening to all the great symphonies and on each Sunday night would play a composition and we had to name the composer and the piece of music!!!. He had an incredible tenor voice and sang in a barbershop quartet while in medical school and even performed in New York on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. He continued to sing in the church choir at Memorial Lutheran Church and also sang with the chorale ensemble that performed Handel's Messiah each year at Easter. He was in great demand to sing at both weddings and funerals. Richard belonged to Rockwell Springs Trout Club, Sylvania Country Club and Highland Meadows Country Club. He was a lifelong member of the Toledo Academy of Medicine. Richard is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lavisa. He is also survived by his daughter, Cynthia Bunch (Wesley) of Lambertville, MI and son, Mark R. Gehring (Mary Kay) of Portland, OR as well as grandchildren Matthew and Laurel Hanson of Toledo, OH and his sister, Mary Richards. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Esther Gehring as well as his daughter, Laura Jean Gehring and sister Nancy Gehring. Funeral services are pending and will be announced at a later time. Arrangements by Reeb Funeral Home, Sylvania, OH. The family would like to thank Sherry, his nurse at Kingston, for her wonderful care of our father this past year.
