Carolyn (known as "Cotton" to everyone she knew) Rutherford was born November 20, 1946, in Vinita, Oklahoma to parents Roy and Edna Foust. The family moved to Arcata when she was just six months old. With the exception of six months in Oklahoma and about eight years in Ukiah, she was a lifelong Humboldt County resident. She raised two sons and was a second mom to all of her sons' friends (most of whom called her mom). Cotton loved sewing and drawing. She had an art booth at the Eureka Flea Market until it closed and enjoyed socializing with the friends she made there. As the seventh of nine children, she had a great multitude of brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews and she adored them all. But her pride and joy were her three grandchildren and she lit up whenever they were around. Between friends and family, and friends of family, and family of friends, her house was never empty. After many years of declining health Cotton passed away peacefully on November 10th. She was preceded in death by her father, Roy, her mother Edna, brothers Bill, Ray, and Wayne, her sister Edna June and her husband Pete. She leaves behind her son Jesse Grammer and his wife Vickie of Bayside, her son Bill Grammer of Redding, her grandson Will Grammer and his three children of Astoria Oregon, her grandson Timothy Grammer of Central Point, Oregon, and her granddaughter Miranda Grammer and her three children of Medford, Oregon, and also a brother, three sisters, and a great number of nieces and nephews. Cotton was loved by all of them, and will be greatly missed. To to the family or in memory of Carolyn Kay Rutherford, pleaseShow more

Age - 52

Kasey Alexander Spoon of Arcata died October 22, 2023, just five days short of his 53rd birthday. Kasey lived an astonishing life filled with creativity and love. He has passed into the next life leaving behind countless friends and devoted family members. He is survived by Kalex Sweetfire Spoon, his son, and his parents John S. Spoon and Nomi Sweetfire. His brothers Brother John, Sunni Paul, and William Trent, as well as his sister Jodi Ann Spoon-Sadlon, honor his passing as he joins their brothers; Clayton Dean, Rolland Neil (Butch), and Anthony Scot in the hereafter. Kasey was a rebel, a fighter, but he was always known as a brother. Growing up in the Santa Clarita Valley, the "seventh son" began an unconventional path of exploration and experience that led him to many places and relationships. . . Saugus, Encinitas, San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point, and Smith River, all were places he lived but, he found his home (and his people) in the small historic town of Arcata in Humboldt County amongst the mighty redwoods he loved. Kasey's legacy includes many years of thought-provoking artwork; free verse poems, hand-painted canvasses and murals, tattoos, as well as mixed media, and most recently amazing works in the digital realm. Accomplished as he was, his greatest work was being a good father and raising his son to know the importance of serving others and helping those around you. He organized many charitable efforts in his hometown, including sock drives for the homeless. His son, Kalex Sweetfire-Spoon, has initiated and directed a film project about Kasey's life story and ultimate battle with ALS, as well as his poetry and artwork. The crowd-funded film "Falling Apart Is Fine Art" due for release in the near future.
