James (Jim) Francis Korinek, age 82, passed peacefully at home in Cherokee, NC February 17, 2024. Born in Elgin, IL, September 13, 1941. The only child of the late Frank Joseph and Virginia Rose (Sigwalt) Korinek. Grandson of the late Joseph and Anna (David) Korinek; Elmer Louis and Rose (Hirn) Sigwalt/Grimm. Jim is survived by his wife of 23 years Christine (Sequoyah) Korinek. He is also survived by Susan Jill (Mitchell) Korinek, and three daughters. Stephanie Rose (Thomas Joel Jr) Glenn of Ft White FL; Virginia Lynn (David Allen) Snedeker of Forsyth, GA; Laura Margaret (Scot Anthony) Maltby of Gilbert, AZ. Grandchildren: Thomas Joel (Laura) Glenn III, Susan Ilyse "Lisa" (Patrick) McPolin, Jonathan Paul (Hannah) Glenn; David Alexander Snedeker and Ms Salina Espericueta, Gabriel Ashar Chance Snedeker; Austin James (Rachel) Maltby, Chaz Mitchell Maltby, and Tanner Anthony Maltby. Great grandchildren: Thomas Joel Glenn IV, Elijah Owen Glenn; Nathan Allen Glenn; Freya Rose McPolin; Alexandria Isabella Marie Espericueta-Snedeker. Jim was a devout Christian who held God close to his heart. He found the positive outlook in all situations. His favorite words of encouragement were, "Help is on the way!" Your burdens in life are laid down at our Saviors feet. We know he is welcoming you with open arms and the words, Well done, my good and faithful servant. A successful owner of a swimming pool business for 45 years, he was also a passionate fan of the Chicago Cubs - Holy Cow! He loved bowling, cooking, classic cars, and helping others in his community. In Gulf Breeze, Florida, he was a 5-term city councilman, deacon at the First Baptist Church, and also a member of the local Gideon chapter. He instilled into others a tireless work ethic, asked of himself and others flawless craftsmanship of work, honesty, and integrity. He was a giant of a man (6'8") in life, but also in the life of his family. He will be deeply missed by many. A private family service was held at Crisp Funeral Home in Bryson City, North Carolina

John “Calvin” Waldroup, 62, of the Birdtown community in Cherokee, NC went home to be with Jesus and many loved ones before on Tuesday, after a brief illness. A Native of Cherokee, and an Enrolled Member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, he was the son Eugene Waldroup of Virginia and the late Roberta Waldroup. Calvin was also preceded in death by his two nephews, Gilbert Dean Waldroup and Joshua “Cubby” Squirrel; and Grandparents, Luther and Elnora Ledford Murphy. He was a member of Bethebara Baptist Church and Lover of God’s Nature. Calvin loved to cook native foods following his grandparents and mothers teachings and gathering Mountain Foods and Native Crafts. He loved his parents, his entire family, and loved hanging out with his cousins until the very end. In addition to his Father, he is survived by his sisters, Kathy, Helen, and Jessica; son, Patrick “Flea” George; Daughter, Tonya Hensley; 9 grandchildren; Special Nieces and Nephews, Brandon, Ray, Lynsey, Daniel, Michael, Courtney, Forrest; a Special Friend, Sis Allison; and Special Eldest Cousin, Irma Bradley and Elizabeth Cochran; and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday at Bethebara Baptist Church. Reverend Max Cochran will officiate and Joe Wolfe will be the Special Guest Speaker. Burial will be in the Birdtown Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11am to 1 pm Saturday February 24, 2024 at the church. Pallbearers will be Ray Stamper, III, Tymius Allison, Daniel Myers, Daniel Waldroup, Mikey Allison; and a junior pallbearer, Channing Stamper. Flea George will be an honorary pallbearer.

Children, Joseph, Lennox, Harlow, Bishop, Anias, and Mother, Mary Emma Harper. Brothers, Rufus Harper, Deandre Harper and Rider Sneed. Sisters, Barbara Haper-Hall and Autumn Smith. Dewayne is preceded in death by Maternal Grandmother and Grandfather Given and Emma Lee Donnell Harvey and Uncle, James Harvey. A memorial service will be held on March 2, 2024 at 12:00pm in the chapel of Long House Funeral Home. The Family will receive friends and visitors an hour before service time. Long House Funeral Home assisted the Family with final arrangements.

She was born on January 23, 1979 to Russell Tooni Jr. and Gracia Walkingstick Taylor. She is preceded in death by her Grandparents of both Mother, Father, and other members of Family. She is survived by her 4 Daughters, Marilyn Walkingstick (Kenny) of Cherokee, NC, Emma Perez (Oscar) of Sylva, NC, Justice Taylor of Cherokee, NC, and Cecilia Perez of Sylva, NC. Two Brothers, Cecil Walkingstick and James Walkingstick, both of Cherokee, NC. One Sister, Crystal Davis and Special Sister, Marlene Armachain. 5 Grandchildren, Tylan Walkingstick, Christian Perez, Ariella Silva, Anayeli Maney, and Uwoduhi Silva, and several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Her body will be taken to Big Cove Pentecostal Church on Monday, February 12, 2024. The Family will receive friends and Family beginning at 5:00pm. Lehua will remain at the church until hour of service on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at 2:00pm with Ann French officiating. Her final resting place will be in the Wolfe Cemetery on Calhoun Rd. Pallbearers will be Francis Walkingstick, John Teesateskie, Oscar Silva, Kenneth Maney, Patricio Espinoza and Ryan Walkingstick. Long House Funeral Home assisted the Family with final arrangements.

Frances Maxine Studer, age 90, passed away at Tsali Care Center on February 3, 2024, after a brief illness. She is survived by her Children; Mary Jolene Studer of Cherokee, NC, Larry Studer of Baileyville, ME, and Charles Studer of Colorado Springs, CO. 2 Granddaughters, Katie and Hannah. Brother, Eugene McGillis and Sister, Juanita Swimmer. Frances is preceded in death by her Husband, Joseph Russell Studer. Parents, Wilfred John and Nellie (French) McGillis. She was very proud of her Cherokee ancestry. She was instrumental in starting the Lima Pow-Wow in Lima, OH. Both of her parents were students at Haskell and Carlisle Indian Schools. This meant she never learned her Cherokee language, but she loved to travel. Traveling all over the United States for Powwows, she also traveled to Germany, Turkey and Italy. A visitation will be held on the evening of Friday, February 9, 2024 in the chapel of Long House Funeral Home, beginning at 5:00pm until 7:00pm. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, February 10, 2024, beginning at 11:00am with Rev. Peter Shaw officiating. Burial will be in the McGillis Family Cemetery in the Big Cove Community. Pallbearers will be among Family and Friends. Long House Funeral Home assisted the Family with final arrangements.

Sandra Marie Bradley (Maples) 75, went to her eternal home on January 6, 2024, at the Cherokee Indian Hospital. Born July 23, 1948, to the late Cecil and Edna Lambert Maples. Sandy grew up in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and moved to Cherokee as a teenager. She attended boarding school in both Santa Fe, New Mexico and Berea, Kentucky. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Lisa Gerard Parker. Her two sisters, Patsy McCoy, and Mary Dent. Her three brothers, Curtis Lambert, Ronald (Chico) Maples, and Charlie Maples. She is survived by her daughters Lori Lambert and Brandi Cooper (Cameron). Her niece who she loved as a daughter Cherise Maples (Robert Linton) and their children Jeyli, Lauryen , and Melani. Her four grandchildren, Lisa Cooper, Charlie Lambert, Anasette Cooper, and Mechelen Cooper. Her sister and friend Linda Maples. Her friends and loafing buddies Kathy Rose and Genevieve Lambert. Finally, her great grandson, the internet repairman Liam Lambert. Sandy retired from Qualla Housing after 30 years of service to the EBCI. She worked as a secretary for the Cherokee Boys Club, a bookkeeper for the EBCI, a beverage server for the first Cherokee Casino, and finally a housing inspector for Qualla Housing. She also spent many years on the Pow Wow circuit with her sister Patsy. After retirement she spent her days with her grandchildren and shopping and eating with her daughters, sisters, and her friends. She was a one-of-a-kind human and will be missed beyond measure. Funeral Services will be held January 11, 2024, at the Chapel of Crisp Funeral home at 11am. The Family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Louise Ann Reed, 65 of the Snowbird Community passed away peacefully January 2, 2024, at Cherokee Indian Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born September 16, 1958, to the late McKinley Reed and Susie Roxie Wachacha, in Chicago Illinois. She graduated from Robbinsville High School, and went on to earn three Associates Degree’s. She retired from the Junaluska Museum after 17 years where she worked as the Cultural Resource Coordinator. She had love genealogy and enjoyed tracing her families’ roots. A Beloved member of the Snowbird Community, she was involved in the community in many ways and was always there to support the community needs. She was also heavily involved in the Cherokee Culture, and she was proud to educate those around her about the Cherokee people. She also worked with the Forest Service beside her father for six years. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by: foster parents Boyd and Edna Chekelelee, infant sister Martha Reed, three brothers Marvin Reed, McKinley Reed Jr., Harvey Chekelelee, Grandparents Martha Wachacha & John Wayne Wachacha, a brother-in-law Don Chekelelee. She is survived by her children: a son Tommy Junaluska Chekelelee and a daughter Samantha Maria Hinojosa; siblings: Carolyn “Boo Boo” Chekelelee and Rose Rodriquez, a brother Jimmy Chekelelee; 11 neices and nephews: Dewitt, Scottie, Tonya (JR), Ashley, Michelle (JR), Jackie, Kelly (Fonz), Stuart, Charlie, and 2 special nieces Evelyn (Andrew), and Tyffany; five grand-children of the heart: Jayden, Ethan, McKinley Ty, Baby Dray, Kyler, and host of great nieces nephews cousins and family friends. The family will receive friends at Crisp Funeral Home on Saturday January 6, 2024, from 1-3pm. A celebration is planned by the family but will be announced at a later time.

She worked at the Cherokees for years and then later continued working in the hospitality industry. She enjoyed making white oak baskets in her spare time, as well as spending time with her loved ones. She is preceded in death by, her mother, Mable Littlejohn, a grandson Estevan Guillen, and a niece Kimberly Thompson. She is Survived by her four children: Tiffany "Tiff" Hernandez (Alberto) of Franklin, NC, Rebecca "Becky" Swayney of Cherokee, NC, Myron "Mallie" Swayney of Cherokee, NC and Joshua "Cody" Swayney of Whittier, NC; one sister: Charlene Cornwell of Cherokee, NC; Her significant other Alvin "Bodie" Tolley of Cherokee, NC who she cherished for the last 8 years; five grandsons: Charlie Swayney, Luis Hernandez, Jonathan Hernandez, Alex Hernandez, and Ezekiel Mendoza; one granddaughter: Kayla Guillen; three nephews: Anthony Thompson, Adrian Thompson, and Brandon Cornwell; two great-nephews: Charlie Thompson, Landyn Thompson; and one great-niece: Kimberlyn Thompson. She loved her Grandkids and spoiled them like there was no tomorrow. She loved to color on her phone while listening to her soap operas on TV. She will be missed and loved by all who knew her. A celebration of life will be held on January 6th, 2024, at 1pm, at Cherokee Baptist Church with Joe Wolfe officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. The service will start Promptly at 1pm.
