William Howard Mercer, 81, of Neponset, died, Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport, IA. Howard was born May 16, 1937 in Galesburg, IL, the son of Stanley and Ruth (Thompson) Mercer. He graduated from Neponset High School with the class of 1955. Howard married Kathleen Hull on December 27, 1974 at the Congregational Church, Sheffield. Howard is survived by his wife, Kathleen; two sons, Stanley (Audrey) Mercer, Kewanee, Michael (Becky) Mercer, Harrisonburg, VA; two grandchildren, Tyler Mercer, Princeton, Ashley Mercer, Princeton; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Howard worked at Martin Engineering in Neponset for several years and later worked at John Deere for 25 years, retiring in 1997. Howard joined the Masons in 1967 and was a 32nd Degree Mason. Howard loved to do woodworking, building and refinishing furniture. He enjoyed working away in the flower garden. Howard was a home body and loved spending time with his dogs. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 pm, Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home. A Masonic Service will be at 7:00 pm, following the visitation. There will be no Funeral Services. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Western Bureau County Food Pantry, Sheffield.
