Age - 90
November 23, 2023
James Samuel Crooks, Sr. was born on March 3, 1933, in Oconee County. He was the son of the late Manzo Nathaniel and Rosa Dawson Crooks. On Tuesday morning at 12:47 a. m. with many of his family members surrounding him, he peacefully slipped away to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Deacon Crooks was indeed touched by an angel of the Lord and immediately went home to be at eternal rest. He received his public education from the schools of Oconee County. He was successfully employed as a law enforcement officer with the Pickens County Sheriff's Department. After which, he worked many years in the drywall construction industry and retired after operating a successful business, Seneca Drywall Company. Deacon Crooks was ordained as a Deacon under the leadership of Reverend S. A. Mattison at the New Hope Baptist Church, Clemson, SC. He served in the role of Chairman Deacon for many years. In the role of deacon, he assisted many deacons in their training. He was also a Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent. Reading the Word of God was a passion for Deacon Crooks. He was a connoisseur of ''good preaching'' and would travel to great distances to hear a sermon that was rightly divided. Gospel singing and preaching put a smile on his face and brought joy to his soul. His favorite gospel quartet singer was Lee Williams. One of the things that Deacon Crooks was very proud of was his sons and grandsons who were ordained into the gospel ministry. He supported them in their various ministries. James leaves to cherish precious memories of his life: loving wife of the home, Ruby Nell Crooks; children: Calvin Crooks (Frankie) of Seneca, SC, Patricia Baptist of Baltimore, MD, Rev. Charles Crooks (Joyce) of Seneca, SC, Robert Crooks (Patricia) of Easley, SC, Mary Reid (David) of Allenhurst, GA, George Crooks of Clemson, SC, Anthony Crooks of Seneca, SC, William Ligon (Annie), James Crooks, Jr. , and Dr. Sandra Sloan (bonus daughter) of Seneca, SC; 28 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
