Mr. William Douglas Harris, Sr. , age 67 of Mount Airy, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday evening, October 5, 2023, in Mount Airy. Mr. Harris was born July 14, 1956, in Surry County to the late Archie Lee and Nancy Noonkester Harris. William was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Surviving is his wife, Nancy Boyd Harris; three sons and daughters-in-law, William Douglas Harris, Jr. and Haley, Chad Eric Harris and Bridget, Dustin Travis Harris and Michelle; five grandchildren, Christian Lee Harris, Cheyenne Rose Harris, Joshlyn Shay Harris, Valerie Star Harris, Amber Rain Harris, Ryan Gage Harris; one great-granddaughter, Oakley Marie Violet Harris; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Wanda Harris Wilson and Dean, Pam Inscore, Jo Harris McIntyre and Jack; and one brother and sister-in-law, Buck Harris and Cynthia. In addition to his parents, Mr. Harris was preceded in death by a sister, Dianne Harris McBride; and a brother-in-law, Darrell Inscore. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 9, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with Rev. Don Whichard and wife Margaret officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 9, 2023, at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is assisting the Harris Family.

Mrs. Frances Overby Scott, age 98, of Mt. Airy went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Ridgecrest Retirement Community in Mt. Airy. Mrs. Scott was born in Patrick County on April 3, 1925, to the late Lloyd Overby and Maggie Anderson. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother who will be dearly missed. She is survived by her eight children, Carol and Jacob Moseley of Fredrick, MD, Alice and Herbet King of Ararat, VA, Billie and Dale Martin of Claudville, VA, Shelby and Ralph Boldt of Stafford, VA, Phillip Scott of Elkin, NC, Gary and Linda Scott of Elkin, NC, JoAnn and Bruce Stonestreet of Mt. Airy, NC, and Kent and Angie Scott of Mt. Airy, NC. Mrs. Scott is also survived by twelve grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; thirteen great great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; one step great grandchild; and a brother, Larry Overby of Stuart, VA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Clarence Scott; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Scott; a sister Mary Jo Anderson; a great grandchild, Jackie Martin; and a great great grandchild, Robert Coburn. The family would like to thank the staff at Ridgecrest, special care from Judy Jessup, and the Hospice nurses at Mountain Valley Hospice. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 11:00AM at Mountain View Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Tony Goins, Rev. Tommy Fuquay, and Rev. Shelby Boldt officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home, for those who wish to pay their respects and sign the book you may come by Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Mr. Paul B. Foley, age 82 of Stuart, Virginia passed away peacefully Friday, November 24, 2023 at Blue Ridge Nursing Home. He was born in Patrick County on March 19, 1941, to the late Roy Benton Foley and Mary Agnes Ross Foley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Julie Shelton. Paul retired from Fieldcrest Mills with over thirty years of loyal service. He enjoyed being outdoors, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and liked tending to his garden. He was very intelligent and enjoyed a challenging card game or puzzle. The joy of his life was his family, his dogs, and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Left to cherish the memories of Mr. Foley are his wife of 43 years, Peggy Lynch Foley of the home; two daughters, Portland Joyce Shelton and husband, David and Debby Joyce Jones and husband, Ricky, all of Bassett; three grandchildren, Amber Fizzano, Sarah Martin and husband, Tommy, and Taylor Shelton and husband, Brad; five great-grandchildren, Rocky Fizzano, Joanna Shelton, Rhiannon Martin, Josie Shelton, and Jack Shelton; one sister, Sue Kodenski and husband, Mike of Bassett; and one niece Laura Jones. Mr. James "Carl" Handy, age 69, of Stuart, Virginia went home to be with his Lord and Savior and his beloved wife, Trish, on Thursday, November 23, 2023, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Patrick County on December 1, 1953, to James "Jim" Hobart Handy and Emma Mae Foley Handy. Carl was preceded in death by his father, Jim Hobart Handy; and the love of his life, Patricia "Trish" Leigh Hubbard Handy. Carl was a loving husband, father, son, Papa, and friend. In his professional life he spent several years working at Tultex and Pannill Knitting before finding his niche as a butcher, a role he filled in the community for over 30 years. A lover of the great outdoors, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether it was hunting deer, squirrel, rabbit or birds, camping, casting a line for trout, or perfecting his swing on the golf course, he embraced every moment with enthusiasm and always had a story to tell. You could often find him watching the Redskins or Yankees with his little dog, Jeter. He enjoyed collecting rocks and cherished every piece brought back from the travels of his friends and family. He lived a very full life, loving his family and friends deeply, but was ready to go home and be reunited with his wife. While he will be missed by so many people, there is comfort in knowing he is now at peace. Carl will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him. Left to cherish the special memories of Carl Handy are his daughter and son-in-law, Leigh Anne Handy Grigas (Andrew Grigas) of Rocky Mount, Virginia; two beloved grandchildren, Ethan James Grigas, Madeline Johanna Grigas, both of Rocky Mount, Virginia; his precious mother, Emma Mae Foley Handy of Stuart, Virginia; and many dear and special friends. A Celebration of Life memorial service for Carl Handy will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at 4:00 P. Ms. Susan Elizabeth Shelor, age 91 of Meadows of Dan, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on November 11, 2023. She was born in Patrick County on June 10, 1932 to the late Posey Lester Shelor and Eloise Badger Newell Shelor. In addition to her parents, Ms. Shelor was preceded in death by three brothers, Glenn D. Shelor, Joseph B. Shelor, and Morgan L. Shelor; two sisters, Nancy Wynn and Alice Campbell; and a favorite nephew, Jay Shelor. Susie Betts graduated from Virginia Tech and the Medical College of Virginia, and enjoyed a successful career in laboratory sciences education for decades. She loved the Lord and her church, Meadows of Dan Baptist Church, where she served as Treasurer for many years and was a choir member. She loved her homeplace, Tobax, where she was born and died. She loved her family, which led to a sound knowledge of the Shelor genealogy. She made many attractive woodworking pieces and needlework pictures. She tenderly cared for several favorite cats during her lifetime. Ms. Shelor is survived by a daughter, Kathryn S. Higgs and husband, Dale Higgs; one sister, Edna Ann Williams of Roanoke; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services for Ms. Shelor will be held Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 2:00 p. m. at Meadows of Dan Baptist Church with Pastor Shawn Carter officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
