William "Bill" Duggan was born on May 4, 1946 to William Henry and Angeline Chrzan in Washington DC and passed away peacefully on September 5, 2023 at Virginia Hospital Center after battling Lung Cancer. Bill was a 1968 graduate of American University and had a 50 plus year career, of federal service, with the Department of Agriculture. In 1977 Bill married Terri Leonard and together they had four children: Bob (Renee), Mike, Jeff and Katie. Bill was a loving and caring husband and father, but his favorite "job" after retirement was being a grandfather to Jacob, Lilliana, Landon, Brynlee and Tatum. Bill is also survived by a brother Daniel (Wyn) and many distant cousins who affectionately knew him as "Uncle Bill. "Bill was an avid sports fan, especially a DC sports fan. If he was not coaching his children's sports teams or bowling on a league, which he was president of, he could be found watching sports. In particular, he loved baseball, golf, football and college basketball. Bill served his country as a federal employee and his faith family as a member of the Knights of Columbus but deep down he was a jokester with a big heart who relished his time visiting the outer banks, doing crossword puzzles, listening to Irish music and spending time with his family.

On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, Chin Chai Hwang, loving wife and mother of three children, two son-in-law and one daughter-in-law, and five grandchildren, passed away at age 86. Chin was born on June 24,1937 in Tainan, Taiwan. Chin worked as a seamstress for 30 plus years until her retirement. She was a model employee who was highly respected by her employers and colleagues. The most important role that she ever had was being a matriarch of the family. The center of her universe was her family. Her devotion and sacrifice for her family was incalculable. Her compassion, kindness, and care that she shared with those who were blessed by her love were immeasurable. She loved being around with her family, especially her best companion of her lifetime, her husband of 60 years and her children and grandchildren. Everyone loved and respected her immensely. She was an excellent cook and loved cooking and eating Chinese foods. Some of her dishes were among the family's favorites. Her beautiful smile was infectious and so was her kind and compassionate spirit. Amy (Daniels) Goss, age 81, of Messiah Village in Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Fairfax Station, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Born October 10, 1942, in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd G. and Ruth (Schumacher) Daniels. Amy earned a B. S. in Education from Bloomsburg University and went on to earn her M. Ed. from Ohio University. She worked in higher education administration for Northern Virginia Community College for more than 27 years. Surviving is her loving husband of 51 years, Galen L. Goss; her brother, Stephen L. Daniels and wife Brenda of Absecon, NJ; her nephew, Keith Daniels and wife Jennifer of Newtown, PA; her niece, June LaFave and husband David of Chicago, IL; as well as her great-niece and nephew, Kate and Stephen Daniels. Amy loved her teddy bears, but not just any teddy bear. Each one had to "speak" to her whether it was her first bear "Pierre" or her constant companion "Augie. " Augie joined her each evening while she and Galen watched their favorite TV shows - Amy on her Lazy Girl side of the couch and Galen on his Lazy Boy side. During their recent downsizing effort before moving to Messiah Village, Amy donated (i. e. , gave away) over 75 of her beloved teddy bears. It was a difficult departure, but she knows they will each find a good home. Amy also loved sharing her home with friends. She loved hosting parties for groups whether it was a going-away party for a work colleague or a summer picnic for the local chrysanthemum club members. She especially loved opening their home for their biennial Christmas Open Houses. There were always a great mix of neighbors, work colleagues from both the community college and Galen's work, and other friends. Amy would hardly make it from the foyer as she greeted each guest coming and going. Amy's professional career started as an elementary school teacher in the Scranton area. After just a couple of years teaching, she knew that she wanted more, leading to her master's degree in Higher Education. She served as a Resident Hall director at Michigan State University for several years. In 1970, she joined the administrative staff at Shippensburg University as the Assistant Dean of Women. Good things happened at Shippensburg - mainly meeting and marrying Galen. In 1973, they moved to Northern Virginia for Galen's first career job. Amy found her way to the Alexandria Campus of the Northern Virginia Community College as Coordinator of Student Activities. Her career at NVCC concluded at the Annandale Campus as a member of the Counseling staff. While at NVCC she developed many strong and lasting friendships. Retirement for Amy meant more time to read fiction books by her favorite authors as well as watching old Westerns - Gunsmoke was her favorite. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 7 at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg, where there will be a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Grace Maria Williams, 60, of Fairfax, Virginia, died on November 22, 2023, after a courageous battle against Lupus for forty-five years. Grace was born March 12, 1963, to the late James L. Williams and Julia G. Williams. She is survived by her mother, Julia G. Williams, brother Dr. Martin J. Williams (Jennifer) and George W. Williams (Kimberley), niece Rebecca Grace Williams, nephews James N. Williams and Martin F. Williams, and many cousins, friends, colleagues and her dog Pebbles. Grace graduated from Phoebus High School in Hampton, Virginia, Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), and the MCV School of Pharmacy. She worked as a Pediatric Oncology Pharmacist in Fairfax, VA, for most of her long career. Grace was active with the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary as a charter member of the Meritorious 4th Degree Ladies of Grace, the Wilton Cardinal Gregory Chapter 53 and a charter member of the 3rd Degree, Mary Mother Lange Court 398. Grace, a third-generation Delta, was a member of the Fairfax County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. ,Grace lived an active, loving life. She played cello in her college orchestra, enjoyed playing golf, enjoying her many friendships, and offering service through church and sorority outreaches. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the funeral home. On November 27, 2023 William Garrett Stack passed into eternal life peacefully at home. Beloved by family and friends he was known as a man of Faith, intelligence, compassion, unwavering service to all. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sylvia Jane Stack, three children, Ben Stack (Tina), Gilbert Stack (Michelle), Anna Herbst (John), seven grandchildren, Kathryn Gee (Luke), Sarah Bergstrom (Paul), Thomas Herbst (Emily), Michael Herbst, Danny Herbst, Michael Stack, Abigail Stack, and six great grandchildren, Owen Gee, Ameila Bergstrom, Lyla Bergstrom, Chole Bergstrom, Garrett Herbst, Henry Herbst, sister, Mary Katherine Masucci, brother, Thomas Stack (Colleen) and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Kansas City, MO, Garrett was proud of his Irish heritage and loved music. He served the US Army. He graduated from Rockhurst College and UMKC Law before relocating to Peoria, IL as a trial lawyer for the National Labor Relations Board. He enjoyed a brilliant career eventually moving his family to Northern VA in 1973, where he rose to the Board's Associate General Counsel. Retiring in 1995, Garrett received numerous accolades including the President's Meritorious Executive Award. A lifelong Catholic and daily Mass attendant, he worked tirelessly in the service of others by volunteering, teaching, and ceaselessly praying, He was devoted to his family and was a beloved presence at countless social gatherings. He was a humanitarian role model whose response in all matters of life's journey began and ended with love. He will be terribly missed. Therese Flood Hile, known affectionately as Terry, passed away peacefully at home on September 26, 2023, in Fairfax, Virginia. Terry is survived by two of her six children: Robert (Bobby) F. Hile and Susan T. Hill; grandchildren: Katie Hile, Morgan & Wesley Bunch, Tony Schaffner & Carlyn Parr, Tommy Hile, Shannon Hill, and Kelly Hill; great grandchildren: Dylan, Jackson, Olivia, and Ashton; siblings: Joe Flood, Kitty F. Flaim, and Jack Flood; as well as many extended family members. She is reunited with her loving husband, John C. Hile; her parents; her sons: John C. (Jackie), Thomas J. (Tommy), and James S. (Jimmy) Hile; her grandson, John Henry Hile; her sisters: Mary F. Jernberg and Marguerite F. Poe; many lifelong friends; and most recently, her daughter, Mary Jo Schaffner, who passed away on September 29th, 2023. Born on January 2nd, 1926, in Washington, D. C. to loving parents Agnes M. (Neary) and Joseph C. Flood, she lived a vibrant and fulfilling life of 97 years, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She grew up one of six, and graduated from St. Cecilia's Academy of Washington, D. C. in 1943. Through starting her career in the department of Veterans Affairs, she met and fell in love with her future husband, John, and married him on April 22nd, 1950. In the following years, John and Terry welcomed six children, building a community and raising them in Falls Church, Virginia. Terry was a radiant woman of unwavering faith in God and love for her family. She was funny, smart, and deeply caring. Further, she was a fervent believer in the power of kindness and generosity, qualities she embodied and frequently shared with those around her. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend, and parishioner, she will be greatly missed, but her legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and lives of those she touched. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 4th, 2023, in Annandale, Virginia, at 11am, with visitation beginning at 10:30am. Following the church service, a private burial will be held at Fairfax Memorial Park, then a celebration of life reception. Her early years were marked by theuntimely loss of her father, a coal miner, which led her and hermother to relocate to Elizabethton, TN, seeking solace and kinshipwith family. Growing up against the backdrop of the majestic Blue RidgeMountains, Bette's spirit was shaped by the beauty and resilience ofthe region. Bette found purpose in helping the people she loved. Inher first job out of high school, Bette spearheaded a campaign in herlocal paper, resulting in the development of a brand new hospital inthe region. A fervent Democrat in a predominantly Republican community,Bette's strong convictions and unwavering principles guided herpath. In her pursuit of purpose and belonging, she ventured toWashington, DC, where she found her calling amidst the bustlingcorridors of activism. A proud member of the Labor movement, Bette's voice echoedloudly with the declaration, "We are Labor!" Her fearless stance in theface of opposition and her leadership in defending liberal valuesexemplify her unwavering commitment to making the world a betterplace. Michael Lyons

Michael T. LyonsMichael Thomas Lyons had a great life. A native to D. C. he was born on December 14, 1934 to Marcus and Margaret Lyons and left us on November 26, 2023, just shy of 89. In 1961 he married the love of his life Carole Anne Lyons and had four sons, Michael, Terrance, Kenneth and Christopher. Mike was a proud graduate of St. John's College High School (1952) and Catholic University (1956) where he received his Chemical Engineering degree followed by a Fellowship to Carnegie Mellon where he received his MBA (1958). Mike was a believer in higher education demonstrated by putting all of his sons and grand kids through college. In addition, Mike created scholarship funds at St. John's College High School as well as Catholic University to acknowledge the scholarship support he received while attending these institutions. Mike started his extremely successful career at Johns Hopkins University Solid Propellant Information Agency. Soon after he took a job in Santa Clara, California as a Chemist in advanced propellant development but left that to take a position at Computer Sciences allowing the family to move back to Virginia. Once here he found an opportunity in space oriented work that he loved at CML Satellite (later became Satellite Business Systems and then MCI). He truly enjoyed his work and co-workers where he oversaw the launch of the first commercial satellite compatible with multiple launch platforms (Delta, Space Shuttle and the Ariene 3). Mike was extremely proud of his work with the Space Shuttle program where his satellite was the first commercial payload, first satellite deployed from the shuttle, first payload to go to geostationary orbit, and the first to use the Payload assist module (PAM) for deployment. He was also proud of a patent on the Space Shuttle (which he almost got to fly on) for a cradle he designed for holding and launching the satellite. In the ensuing years with SBS, he became Director of Space Systems, which included the ground control facilities and the personnel at Clarksburg, MD and Castle Rock, CO. He continued his career as a Senior Executive at NASA where he admired and enjoyed working with astronauts. He subsequently went on to form his own consulting company, Lyons Aerospace where space communication and broadcast companies sought out his expertise and he ultimately retired at age 80. Mike loved spending time with his sons, daughter in-laws and 10 grand kids. Mike made a point of trying to bring the whole family together for beach (where it always rained) and ski vacations. He owned two time shares in Park City, UT where the whole family would go skiing every year; these trips created fond memories for all. Mike loved to ski and set the bar high still skiing at age 80 where afterward he would always enjoy a glass of Jack Daniels on the rocks. Mike loved to take the family out to restaurants and wineries to get everyone together and he enjoyed afternoon lunches with friends. Mike loved to travel the world and share his stories of his adventures. Mike also had a passion for sailing that he passed on to his sons by bringing them to Camp Letts where they all became proficient on sunfish. Mike was a life time sports car enthusiast starting with a 1953 MG TD, then a Carmen Gia, Mustang T top, Supra Targa Top, Lexus SC 430 along with building a 1934 Mercedes Benz replica with his oldest son. Even though the team tried to break him he remained a diehard Redskins fan and would only miss a game to attend grand kids sporting events which he loved more. Mike also enjoyed playing tennis with friends and neighbors. Mike was an early adopter of technology so the boys were beneficiaries of having the first Atari console in the neighborhood and the only family receiving free HBO since he knew where to point the six foot satellite dish installed in the backyard (something only large hotels had at the time). Mike was predeceased by his parents Marcus and Margaret Lyons and wife Carol Ann Lyons. Mike is survived by his sons Michael, Terrence (wife Susan), Kenneth (wife Valerie) and Christopher (wife Marianne), his brother Mark and his ten grandchildren: Max, Kyle, Cydney, Shannon, Hannah, Liam, Ben, Riley, Connor, Charlotte and nieces and nephews.Show more

Zenaida Santos Cruz, age 87, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2023. She was a loving mother, sister, and grandmother. Born in Bulacan, Philippines, she grew up closely with her siblings and met the love of her life, whom she married and enjoyed over 55 years with. In this time, she lovingly raised her three children and - as they grew up and had children of their own, she eagerly took the role of loving grandmother. The summers growing up with "Mommy Zeny" taking care of them will always be fond memories for her grandchildren. There is so much of Zenaida that her family misses. Her cooking - which has been passed down through shared recipes; the sounds of The Filipino Channel, which would have to be turned on wherever a family party was held; her fandom of actress/singer Sarah Geronimo, which was only beaten by one other passion - her love for her family. She's survived by her two sons, Arneil and Arnold; their wives, Irene and Maria; her sister, Fely; and her three grandchildren, Ana, Carmina, and Lorenz.Show more

John Jay Mangan, a distinguished figure in the realm of International Trade law, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2023, in Fairfax Station, Virginia. Born on April 29, 1941, in Mineola, New York, John was a man of faith, humor, and analytical prowess, whose dedication to his profession was exceeded only by his devotion to his faith and family. John was the cherished son of the late Leo and Clara Mangan and the beloved brother to the late Lee and Charles Mangan. His legacy lives on through his loving wife of 53 years, Carol Fox Mangan, and their five children: John J. Mangan, Jr. (Joanna), Julie Kurzweil (David), Timothy, Keith, and Cindy Golias (Chris). He was also a proud grandfather to Ashley-19, Caroline and Heather-16; John J. (Jack)-15, and Veronica-6. John's intellectual journey began at Cornell University, where he received a B. S. in Civil Engineering ('64). His thirst for knowledge and passion for justice led him to earn a law degree (Cornell '67). His education laid the foundation for a remarkable career that spanned over four decades. After graduation, John joined U. S. Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he served as the chief litigator of International Trade for 22 years. His journey continued at the law firm of Skadden, Arps in Washington, D. C. where he spent 19 years as the chief litigator of International Trade. John became a partner in 1992 and retired in 2008, leaving behind an indelible mark on the firm and the industry at large. Throughout his life, John never lost sight of his life's true loves - his faith, his family, and his affinity for the water. He was known for his analytical mind, which he employed not only in his work but also in his personal life. His sense of humor was a source of joy and comfort to those around him, and his faith-filled life was an inspiration to all. John Jay Mangan was a man of many virtues, but his greatest achievement was undoubtedly the beautiful family he built with his wife, Carol. His legacy will continue to live on through them, and he will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his sharp wit, and his devotion to his family and his profession. His passing is a great loss, but his life was a greater gift - a gift that will continue to inspire and guide those who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
