William Arvin Coppedge, 82, of Hemphill, TX, passed away on September 4, 2023, in Bullard, TX. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, September 14th, 2023, at Hamil Funeral Home in Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, September 15th, 2023, at the Hamil Family Funeral Home, Bro. David Cason (Baptist), officiating. A burial will follow at the Texas Veterans Cemetery of Abilene at approximately 2:00 PM. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Bill (Arvin to his family) was born in Sweetwater, Texas to William Joseph and Annie Clendennen Coppedge on June 5th, 1941. He went to school at Abilene High School. He graduated in 1960 and married his high school sweetheart Merrilyn Ann Pebworth on December 29, 1960, in Abilene. They shared adventures across the globe for over 62 years. Bill enlisted in the United States Army in 1960 and served with distinction for 9 years, His service included a year-long combat deployment to Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile). He was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" device (for heroism in battle), a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat, and received many other citations and awards, including 21 Air Medals during combat service. He worked as a Rotary Wing (helicopter) Subject Matter Expert and Technical Representative for Bell Helicopter and Pratt & Whitney Engines for approximately 40 years in the United States and abroad. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10351, Disabled American Veterans, and the Masonic Lodge of Dale Alabama. Upon his retirement he and Merrilyn bought a home on the lake, where he enjoyed boating, fishing and relaxation. They had many wonderful neighbors who became like family over the years. In the years to follow, the house on Toledo Bend Lake became a place for their family to all come visit and share in many memorable gatherings. Arvin was preceded in death by, an infant daughter Lisa, his father, William Joseph Coppedge, his mother, Annie Coppedge, and his sister Ann Collier. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Merrilyn Coppedge, his son William Joel "Bill"(wife, Cathie) Coppedge, his daughter Laurie Ann Patton (fiancé Paul Thiem), and his son Steven Daniel Coppedge (wife, Laura). Both sons are also veterans of the Coast Guard and Army respectively. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. And he will be missed by his beloved dogs Barney and Max. Gaylon Roygene Ferguson, 73, of Pineland, Texas passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023 at his residence. Gaylon was born June 29, 1950 in Hemphill, Texas to Willie Samuel Ferguson and Nettie Irene Rogers Ferguson. He was a lifelong resident of Sabine County and had served as a member of the United States Air Force and attended Sam Houston University where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree. He opened Piney Woods Nursery in Pineland in 1978 and there he kept his customers supplied with all their gardening and landscaping needs until his retirement in 2016. He moved to Mount View, Arkansas after retiring and returned to Pineland in 2021. He was a longtime member of Pineland Church of Christ. He truly loved gardening, taking particular interest in his blueberries and his roses. Gaylon was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Nettie Ferguson; wife, Diana Jordan Ferguson; brothers, Glynn Ferguson and Ronny Jay Ferguson; and sisters, Lorene Waetjen, Katherine Chance and Eva Gordy Lunsford. He is survived by his brothers, Donald Paul Ferguson of Livingston, Johnny Ray Ferguson of Lake Jackson, and Bertz Ferguson of Pineland; stepsons, Harrison Tyler Hodges of Yellville, AR and Richard Adam Hodges of Beaumont; four step grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. "Bobby Ray Wright, 87, of Hemphill, Texas passed away on October 16, 2023, after a long, successful life. He was born March 22, 1936, in Wink, Texas to Sudie Frances and George Washington Wright. His mother was almost 50 years old when Bobby was born. His father was Chief of Police in their hometown. On February 28, 1955, he married Elizabeth Jane, with whom he had two children, Rebecca and Bobby Jr. He worked at Rohm \u0026amp; Haas Chemical Plant in Deer Park, Texas for 22 years. Bobby and Jane moved from Houston, Texas to Hemphill, Texas in 1981, where he worked at Sabine County Hospital for 25 years. Family meant everything to Bobby. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Fishing became a staple during family gatherings and weekend visits. He was also an adventure seeker who loved to travel. Making knives was a hobby he became passionate about in his spare time. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Geoge and Sudie Wright, sisters Annie Strickland and Marie Page, brothers Herman, Lloyd, Frankie, Cecil Wright, son Bobby Wright Jr. , and grandson Christopher Ray Howard Sr. Bobby was survived by his wife Elizabeth Jane Wright, daughter Rebecca Wright Howard, grandsons Jason Howard and wife Janet, and Jeremy Weigand and wife Leta, great grandchildren Austin Howard, Madison McComb, Christopher Howard Jr. , Aidan Howard, Sandy Howard, Zoey Howard, and Chandler Weigand. The funeral services will be held on October 26, 2023, at San Jacinto Memorial located at 14659 East Freeway, Houston, Texas 77015. Ommer Dean "O. D. " Hamilton of Midlothian, Texas (formerly of Hemphill) passed away Friday, October 27, 223 at Midtowne Meadows in Midlothian. O. D. was born in July 1, 1929 in Palmer, Texas to Ommer Dean Hamilton and Thelma Elizabeth Pace Hamilton. He was a trainman with Santa Fe Railroad for many years where he had worked as an Engineer and Brakeman as well as many other positions. He was assigned the position of teaching any new government rules to the other trainmen and women, so he gutted a boxcar, filled it with school desks and installed a sign that read "Hamilton College of Boxcar Knowledge". There he kept everyone up to date on any and all regulations. Later, he was named Rules Examiner for the Northern Division of Texas Santa Fe Railroad. But he wasn't done yet. Finally, he was promoted to Northern Division Safety Supervisor, the position that he held until his retirement in 1974. After retiring, he and his wife, Opal, moved to Hemphill where they were members of First Baptist Church in Hemphill and where he served as a deacon. He had also served as a deacon at Emanuel Baptist Church in Beaumont, First Baptist Church in Loeb and First Baptist Church in Mansfield, Texas. O. D. was a 62 year Master Mason with Littleton Fowler Lodge #365 in Hemphill. He was given the Golden Trowel Award in 2002and he had served as Chaplain in 1990 and 1991. He joined Scottish Rite on March 28, 1990. He was a 33rd Degree Mason and a White Hat in Scottish Rite. He joined the Sharon Shrine Temple in 1991 and was a Charter Member of the Sabine County Shrine Club. He loved God and his family more than anything else. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and grandchildren in his motorhome, showing them the United States. O. D. is survived by his wife of 74 years, Opal Elaine (Erwin) Hamilton; daughters, Cindy Bell of Lafayette, Louisiana and Candy Shuffitt and husband, Larry, of Venus, Texas; brother, Bill Hamilton and wife, Mary Ann of Midlothian; grandchildren, Ken Harrison and wife, Stephanie, Tammie Harrison, April Cunningham and husband, Jason, Melanie Barber and husband, Michael, and Michelle Freeman and husband, Wayne; great grandchildren, Zach and wife, Paige, Ky, Grant and wife, Olivia, Evan, Matt, Madison, Jace, Morgan, Maddox and Jaxson; and great great grandchild, Ivy Lucille. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Casi Harrison; brothers, Gerald Hamilton and S. N. Hamilton; and granddaughter, Christina Bird. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p. m. until 7:00 p. m. Friday, November 3, 2023 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p. m. Saturday, November 4, 2023 in First Baptist Church of Hemphill under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Bro. Troy Richardson officiating. Thomas Jefferson Hamilton 97, of Hemphill, Texas passed away at his home surrounded by family after a brief battle with cancer, on Saturday, October 21, 2023. Thomas was born to Henry Jefferson Hamilton and Eula Mae (Retherford) Hamilton on Sept 6, 1926, in Newton County, Texas. Thomas spent early years being raised in Newton County and later moving to Hemphill with his parents and sister. Upon marriage to his first wife, he joined the United States Army serving two years during World War II. Later moving to Freeport, Texas where he raised his family while working at Dow Chemical and surveying for Max Hagan. He was a member of West End Baptist Church, Freeport, Texas. At that time Thomas chased his daughters while they enjoyed band, twirling, volleyball and softball. He coached and refereed softball and volleyball as well. Thomas was an avid hunter, fisherman and game conservationist in Sabine County. He raised foxhounds and loved raising and working his cows and growing a garden every year. He was a member of First Baptist Church Hemphill, Texas and served as a Deacon. He was active with RA's as well. Thomas served on many committees and organizations such as the Texas Militia as a young boy, Lions Club, VFW post 10351 and former Commander of American Legion post 197 were just a few. He worked in the timber and survey industry in Sabine county, the oil exploration industry all over the State of Texas and Louisiana and as a Liaison to Brazoria County Commissioner Sonny Travis and Mr. Travis' district constituents before retiring back to Sabine County. Thomas returned to Sabine County where he served two and one half terms as Justice of the Peace of Precinct 1 and was appointed to Justice of Peace of Precinct 2. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Betty; a brother, Robert Hamilton of Hemphill; daughters, Sandra (Sandy) Stepp of Kingwood, TX, and Glenda Burwood and husband, Werner Burwood, of Hemphill; a special niece, Dean Ford (Buzzy) of Clute, TX; stepdaughters, Myra Lewis (Ray) of Jefferson, TX and Kay Lewis (George) of La Vernia, TX; four grandchildren and six step grandchildren, six great grandchildren and 11 step great grandchildren, four step great-great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. Judge is well known for his stories of Sabine County at the breakfast table at Brookshire Brothers in Hemphill. Loved and treasured by so many especially his "adopted" boys in the county. He is predeceased by his parents; his wife of 38 years and mother of his children, Maxine Flournoy Hamilton; second wife of 20 years, Dixie Newberry Hamilton; sister, Uni Bell Cannon; brother, T. R. Retherford; sister-in law Francis Hamilton, son-in-laws Jerry Stepp and Wayne Lewis; nieces, Jeffery Lynn Strickland and Annette Conner; and longtime friends and partners in crime, Clement McDaniel and Bill ReynoldsThe family will gather at Starr Funeral Home Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 5:00 p. m. until 7:00 p. m. in memory of the Golden Legacy he has left, welcoming visitors. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church Hemphill, Texas, Thursday, October 26, 2023 beginning at 10:00 a. m. under the direction of Starr Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest in the City of Hemphill Cemetery following the service. Serving as pallbearers are Nick Harmon, Werner Burwood, Josh Vance, Nick Hearon, John Brewton, Larry Lindsey and Doug Williams. Honorary Pallbearers are the Deacons of First Baptist Church.
