Carol Young Pomeroy was born on November 8, 1928 in Peekskill, New York in the Hudson River Valley and passed away on December 4, 2023 at the age of 95. Her parents were Everett Townsend Young and Katharine Husted Young, and her older sister was Priscilla Young Creed. Carol grew up at Stonelea, a beautiful estate on Oak Ridge Parkway in Peekskill, in a house designed and built by her father using stones found on the property. She attended Peekskill High School, where she was a cheerleader and participated in many activities. While volunteering to serve as a dance partner for Peekskill Military Academy (PMA) students in 1943, she met Robert Murray Pomeroy, from Dalton, Massachusetts, who was attending PMA in preparation for his successful application to West Point. They continued their courtship while Carol finished high school and college. Robert graduated from West Point in 1948, joining the Army Air Corps, soon to become the U. S. Air Force. They were married on June 8, 1949, and four days later, Carol graduated from Connecticut College. For the next three decades, Robert and Carol traveled all over the world in service of the United States Air Force. Over the years, they lived in Louisiana, the Philippines, South Carolina, Germany, Italy, Colorado, England, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Belgium, as Robert rose to the rank of Colonel before retiring in 1979. During his Korean War assignment in 1951, Bob's first son, Robert Murray Pomeroy, Jr. , was born in the Philippines. 1953 brought the birth of daughter, Diane Katharine Pomeroy (now Griffin), at Shaw AFB in Sumter, South Carolina. While stationed in Italy in 1956, Bob and Carol's third child, David Warren Pomeroy, was born. Carol served as a substitute teacher for Fairfax County schools in Virginia, and worked as a licensed tour guide in Washington D. C. and the surrounding areas. After Bob's retirement, they joined the Chesapeake Yacht Club and spent many hours on their boat "Blue Yonder" sailing on the Chesapeake Bay. For several years, Bob and Carol also helped organize annual wintertime cruises to the Caribbean with groups of their retired friends. Carol was a loving mother and supportive wife who has handled those dual responsibilities with class, compassion and understanding for more than seven decades. Robert Jr. , Diane, and David have all gone on to have successful careers and produced seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Robert Jr. , who lives in Denver, Colorado, recently retired after more than 40 years in environmental and utility law. Diane Pomeroy Griffin is a longtime family lawyer, and in 2018 was named a Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge for the city of Portsmouth, Virginia. David is a professional musician living in Nashville, Tennessee, and is President of the Nashville Musicians Association, AFM Local 257 and International Vice President of the American Federation of Musicians. After their retirement, Robert and Carol moved to Portsmouth, Virginia in 1999. They moved to the Harmony retirement community in Suffolk, Virginia in 2015. They always enjoyed participating in the various activities going on at their facility and especially visiting with and hearing from their extended family. They celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary shortly before Robert's death on July 24, 2022. The family thanks Robert and Carol's caretakers: Edith Wilson, Hazel Ward, and Sarita Craig for their attention, compassion, and assistance over the past few years. Robert and Carol Pomeroy are once again reunited in heaven, and all of our family are grateful for the love and guidance they gave to us for so many years. Rest in Peace, Carol Pomeroy.
