Laura Elaine Finnerty, 87, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away Thursday, February 29th, 2024 peacefully, at Jeanes Hospital, in Philadelphia.Laura was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 4, 1936, the daughter of the late Laura M. (Karlinska) and Robert H. Smith.She was the widow of Edward J. Finnerty who preceded her on June 8, 2010. They were married at St. Leo’s Church and spent 52 happy years together.She was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Church in Philadelphia, PA where she served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.Laura worked as an Office Manager at Sandra Whipple, MD before retiring in 1999. She was a volunteer at Fox Chase Cancer Center from 2010 to 2020.Laura was the beloved wife of the late Edward and is survived by two loving daughters, Patricia Rosenberger (Barry) of Pottstown and Kathleen Green, of Philadelphia. She was the devoted Mom-Mom to Robert Whaley (Kaleigh), Leslie Basile (Mike), Sean Whaley (Lacey), Bill Green (Samantha), Jessica Green (Anthony) & Kristin Green (Jarred). Great Grandmother of Rowyn and Mikey Basile & Jordan and Eddie Whaley.A Public Visitation will be held from 9:30am to 10:20am on Tuesday, March 5th at Our Lady of Consolation Church, 7056 Tulip St. Philadelphia, PA 19135. Following, a funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30am. A spirited woman, Maddie lived her life with an infectious zest that uplifted everyone around her. She dedicated her life to nurturing her family and creating a warm, inviting home in Holland, PA, Cape May NJ, and in Elizabethtown, PA.Madeline, the compassionate homemaker, was known for her supportive nature, always ready to lend a hand or offer a comforting word when needed. Her hobbies brought her great joy, from swinging her golf club on sunny afternoons, to the thrill of chance at casinos or the friendly competition of card games. She cherished quiet moments immersed in a good book or completing a word search, but equally loved an enriching dinner out on the town. Her spirit was encapsulated in her love for her family, especially her adored grandchildren, who were her pride and joy.Madeline is survived by her children, Tracey (James) Welch, Douglas (Beth) McLeod, and Linda (Sean) Swope. She leaves a rich legacy to her grandchildren, James, Kaitlyn, Kyle, and Kelly, who will remember her as a pillar of strength, guidance, and unwavering love. In Loving Memory of Marty "Pop" Golden (1930 - 2024) Martin “Marty” Golden, affectionately known as Dad, Pop O’Golden, Old Poppy, and Uncle Marty passed away peacefully on February 29, 2024, at the age of 93.Devoted and loving husband to his lifelong sweetheart Elizabeth “Betty” Golden (nee Schnatz); Dedicated father to Kathleen (James), Michael (Theresa) and Martin,Jr. (pre-deceased); grandfather to seven, great-grandfather to ten, and close brother-in-law to Peggy Golden. Preceded in death by siblings: Michael, Patsy (Frank), Corinna (Jimmy), and Jimmy (Peggy). Marty was born, raised, and lived his entire life in Fishtown. A Korean War Veteran Pop was a pillar of his community, a friend to all, and a family man at heart. Celebrated as the Fishtown Beer Man, Marty's life was one of kindness, love, joy, laughter, and commitment to his Catholic faith. He possessed a natural talent for storytelling, with a repertoire from his many life experiences that could captivate any audience. His jokes and many sayings brought smiles and laughter to those around him.A devoted son, husband, father, uncle, and friend, Marty's love for his family was immense. He wore many jeff caps with grace, but perhaps none fit him as perfectly as that of Pop and Old Poppy. His unconditional love and support were the foundation of his family, creating cherished memories that will forever hold a special place in their hearts. Marty's passion for life extended beyond his love for his family and friends. He had a deep connection to his neighborhood through his countless known and unknown acts of kindness. An avid gardener, lover of Turner Classic movies, Seinfeld, Irish Music, chocolate, ice cream, Hershey’s chocolate syrup - actually anything sweet. Marty found joy in all of life’s moments. Mary Jo Carelli (nee Mele) died on Wednesday February 28, 2024. Also known as Mary or Maria, she was the wife of the late Frank Carelli. She is survived by many of her loving nieces and nephews. Retired with 42 years of service in the capacity of office supervisor for the John Hancock Insurance Company. Mary had an avid love for music, played the violin as a child, performed in many Operas with her beautiful operatic voice. She sang for many weddings and funerals, was one of the first cantors for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.Mary belonged to the Delaware Valley Choral Society, Our Lady of Fatima Guitar Group and St. Ephrem’s Choir. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas #2230 for well over 25 years.Mary belonged to Adoration at Our Lady of Fatima and served as Cantor for the Blue Army for over 25 years. Frances R. Byers

Frances R. Byers, age 83, February 27, 2024, daughter of the late Joseph A. and Frances Hollihan Byers, sister of the late Carol Byers Coccagna, loving aunt of Carol M. Coccagna, and dear longtime friend of the late Marve Prowisor. Also survived by many cousins. Fran was born in Philadelphia in 1940, graduated from St. Leonard's Academy, earned a BA in Mathematics from Rosemont College, Rosemont, PA, and a PhD in Educational Measurement and Research from the University of Pennsylvania. She worked as a computer programmer for Bell Telephone of PA and as a statistical assistant in the Office of Admissions at the University of Pennsylvania where she received a fellowship for doctoral study there in Educational Measurement and Research. She began working in the School District of Philadelphia Office of Assessment while completing her PhD, and continued serving in various positions there in program evaluation, data analysis and the administration of large-scale testing programs in the public schools for 36 years. While working, and particularly after retirement, Fran worked actively in both her church, St. Francis de Sales, and her University City community. She sang in the choir, organized flea markets and assisted in many projects to help the church as well as St. Francis de Sales School, from which she graduated. She often wrote articles for the neighborhood newspaper about church and community happenings. She served for decades on the board of directors for the Spruce Hill Community Association as well as the Friends of Clark Park, for both of which she also served several terms as President. She organized several events that became community traditions, like "Bark in the Park", Veterans Day commemoration at the Gettysburg stone in Clark Park, Christmas caroling in Clark Park by candlelight and co-chaired the annual Charles Dickens birthday party. She was Secretary of the Police District Advisory Council for the 18th District and organized monthly meetings in which members of the Police Department and the University City District met with community members to discuss matters of neighborhood concern. She served on the local election board and later as Judge of Elections for many decades. She was Secretary, then Treasurer, of the condo association at the shore for many years where she and her family enjoyed vacationing. Dr. Byers' family will receive friends on Thursday March 7th at St. Francis de Sales Church from 6:30 to 7:30PM followed immediately by her Funeral Mass. Interment will take place Friday March 8th at 1:00PM at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Fran's name be made to St. Francis de Sales School, 917 S. 47th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19143, St. Francis de Sales Church, 4625 Springfield Ave. Philadelphia PA 19143, or the Carmela Terlingo Cancer Fund.
