Samuel Maynard

Samuel Maynard

Age - 70

December 6, 2023

SAMUEL MITCHELL MAYNARD, Age 70, graduated to Eternal Life on or just prior to November 25, 2023 at home in Irving. He was a life-long resident of Irving and second born son to J. W. Maynard and Margie Kathryn Smith on December 4, 1952 at Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler, Texas. His birth was soon after the Family’s return back to East Texas from the San Diego Naval Base after Father J. W. was discharged from active duty with the US Navy during the Korean War. The Maynard Family with Sam and older brother John soon after in January 1953 moved to West Dallas and then to Irving in June 1955 as J. W. started a long career with Chance Vought Aircraft which later became Ling Temco Vought (LTV). Sam attended Barton Elementary, Crockett Junior High and then Irving High School graduating in May 1971. He was a proud Tiger football and track team member all four years at Irving High winning letters in both sports. Sam started his freshman year at UT Arlington but his college education was interrupted at the end of the first semester by the National Draft Lottery which his birthday in 1952 drew the #1 draft spot with no college deferments available for the high school graduating classes starting 1971 and later. Sam dropped out of school and joined the Air Force as an active duty Airman after graduating from boot camp during the Christmas holidays of 1971 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He served 6 months on active duty and then a total of 6 years as a Reservist until his Honorable Discharge. Sam was able to reenroll at UTA after his active duty ended and he graduated with a Business Administration degree in December 1975. Sam started his professional career first with Continental Insurance and worked as an insurance underwriter for 30 years. Sam became a proud father and family man with the birth of his son Ryan with wife Tonya. Sam started a second career as a journeyman electrician joining his friends whom owned an electrical contracting company. As he said, nothing was better than working with his friends!! This surprised the entire family as Sam was never known in his earlier years to be interested in working with his hands to build or fix anything!! He finally retired at age 65 after working for an alarm company to stay away from high voltage. Sam was a strong believer in physical fitness and earned several black belts in the martial arts in his younger adulthood. He was always in the Irving YMCA gym early most mornings and made many friends there. In his spare time, he enjoyed golf and bird hunting with his many friends. Sam was also a dog lover and many stray and shelter dogs found a forever home with Sam. Sam always made time for family and watched daily over his parents with their declining health in their final years. Sam was always excited to hear of the accomplishments of his many nephews and nieces. Sam is preceded in death by his parents J. W. & Margie Maynard and by his grandparents Gordon & Mollie Maynard and Burl & Maggie Smith. Sam’s only child, Ryan Maynard, is left to succeed him along with stepson Brandon Poarch and wife Melissa, brother John Cornel Maynard and wife Tonie, sister Susan Diane Maynard Addy and his beloved and faithful dog Holly. Nephews and nieces are Aubrey Addy McWilliams and husband Chad, Matthew Maynard and wife Ana Paula, Mark Maynard and fiancé Rachel Ortega, Kelley Addy Caruso and husband Louis, and Kevin Addy. Great nephews and great nieces include Erin, Connor, Emma, Hayden, Caroline, and John Wesley. Loved ones left to grieve Sam are comforted in the faith that he is reunited with his parents and grandparents in the presence of The Lord.Show more

Vernon Schoemaker

Vernon Schoemaker

Age - 95

December 6, 2023

Vernon Walter Schoemaker, age 95, passed away on December 1, 2023, at his home in Irving, Texas, surrounded by his loving family and under the gentle care of VITAS Healthcare (hospice). Vernon was born in Scotia, Nebraska, to Walter Arthur Schoemaker and Elsie Christine Hermsmeyer Schoemaker. He was the second eldest of eight children--Verneice (John), Vernon (Barbara), Wayne (Gloria), Willis (Sally), Eleanor (Bernie), Ellen (Floyd), Darlene (Don), and Daryl (Rita). Vernon served in the United States Navy in occupation forces after World War II. After he left military service, he married Barbara Jean Trafton in July of 1950, in Mankato, Minnesota. They made their first home in Amarillo, Texas, where Vernon sold used cars for his uncle, Omar Hermsmeyer. Barbara and Vernon had three children--David (Dyanna Brown), Douglas (Martha Salinas), and Debbie (Joe Ezzell), eight grandchildren--Jereme Schoemaker (Deirdre), Joshua Schoemaker (Kim), Jonathan Schoemaker (Nicole), Joe Ezzell (MacKenzie), Jeffrey Schoemaker, Lindsey Ezzell (Cade Simpson), Jacob Ezzell (Kelci), and James Schoemaker, and thirteen great-grandchildren--Taylor Schoemaker, Ethan Schoemaker, Trinity Schoemaker, Kenzie Schoemaker, Van Schoemaker, Liam Schoemaker, Cooper Simpson, Camden Simpson, Lumi Ezzell, Evelyn Schoemaker, Nevina Schoemaker, Joe Woodard Ezzell III, and Gunnar Ezzell. Vernon and Barbara moved to Irving, Texas, in 1968 to open Toyota of Irving, which remains a family-owned business to this day. In the beginning, the dealership had a good month when they sold thirty cars. By 1979, they were selling up to seventy cars a month. The business continued to thrive, and a new, state-of-the art building opened on Airport Freeway in 2015. The success of the business was largely due to Vernon's keen business acumen and his incredible work ethic--he was known to work up to sixteen hours a day at "the store," as he called it. Vernon and Barbara recently celebrated their 73rd anniversary, another amazing accomplishment. Vernon was a member of the Irving Noon-Day Lion's Club and Plymouth Park Baptist Church, and he was an avid hunter who continued to hunt into his nineties. Even though he struggled with congestive heart failure for several years, he fought hard and never gave up until his body failed him. Visitation will be held at the Colonial Funeral Home in Irving on December 12th from 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a. m. on December 13th at Plymouth Park Baptist Church. The family will host a reception at the Las Colinas Country Club immediately following the service. Burial will take place at a future date at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider making a donation in Vernon's name to the American Heart Association or the Irving Noon-Day Lions Club.
