Wayne Hood, a loving and spirited man of faith, passed away peacefully of natural causes in Opelika, Alabama on September 9, 2023. Born on June 29, 1940, Wayne lived a full and vibrant life, touching the hearts of many with his unwavering faith and love for his family. Wayne was a talented carpenter, dedicating 45 years of his life to Batson Cook Construction Company before his well-deserved retirement. His skill and dedication were evident in every project he undertook, leaving a lasting legacy in the buildings he helped construct. His work was not just a job, but a passion, and he took great pride in his craft. Wayne was a man deeply committed to his faith. He served the Lord his entire life, and his faith was a guiding light for him and those around him. He was a long-standing member of the Evangel Temple Assembly of God in Huguley, where he served as the Sunday school superintendent for many years. His dedication to his church and his faith was an inspiration to all who knew him. Wayne was also a man of many interests. He enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves play. He was also a keen traveler, exploring numerous places with his beloved wife of 64 years, Saundra. Their adventures took them to many new places including, but not limited to Canada, Nova Scotia, Virginia, Israel, and the mountains, among other places. Wayne also found joy in the simple pleasure of fishing, a pastime that brought him peace and contentment. Above all, Wayne was a family man. He is survived by his wife, Saundra, his sons Dennis (Pam), Valley, Perry "P. L. " Hood (Tracey), Fredonia, his grandchildren Gaige Williams, Jock Hood, Drew Hood, and his great-granddaughter, Addison Hood. He also leaves behind his special niece and nephew, Davey Cotney and Stacy Cotney, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, H. O. Hood and Irene Brand Hood, a son, Bruce Hood, siblings, Lurline Hamby, Sue McCain, Lillian Walden, Cecil Hood, and Hugh Hood. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at 11:00 A. M. EDT at the Evangel Temple Assembly of God Church in Huguley with interment following in Harmony Memorial Park. His family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6:00P. M. EDT until 8:00P. M EDT.

Tony Kenneth Baker, 65 of Opelika, AL, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on November 30th. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm CST on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at Providence Baptist Church, 2807 Lee County Rd 166 Opelika, AL 36804 with Rev. Rusty Sowell officiating. Mr. Baker was born November 4, 1958 in Opelika, AL, son of the late Herman Hall (Sonny) Baker and Brenda Guy Baker. Tony knew the Lord and was saved and baptized. He was a highly skilled mechanic for many years owning his own business, Opelika Generator and Starter. Tony enjoyed his annual hunting trip to West Virginia with his brothers and friends. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Connie Stough Baker of Opelika, AL; son Jamey (Mechelle) Baker of Opelika, AL; mother Brenda Guy Baker of Opelika, AL; Grandchildren Eli, Raylan, Kaitelyn, and Peyton. Laura Perry

Laura Ann Perry passed away peacefully on November 30, 2023, in Opelika, Alabama. Born on September 9, 1940, in Chambers County, Laura's life was a testament to her loving, thoughtful, and friendly nature. Laura dedicated her life to her family, a source of unwavering support and care. She is survived by her loving daughters, Irene Bailey and her husband Rickey, Sandra Perry Reece and her husband Robert, Darlene Crawley and her husband Kevin, and Julie Perry. Laura's legacy extends to her adoring grandchildren, Jason, Tiffany, Casey, Sara, and Aaron, and her great-grandchildren, Trapper, Taylor, Jake, Logan, Joey, and Abriannah, who will carry forward her spirit of generosity and kindness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Perry; sons, Aubrey Perry, Ronnie Perry, and Homer Perry; grandsons, Jared Holloway and Toby Burkey. Throughout her career, Laura was a valued employee at West Point Pepperell, where her diligence and commitment to excellence were evident to all who worked alongside her. Laura's passions were many, but none so prominent as her love for cooking. She was renowned for her ability to create a feast, always cooking enough to ensure no one left her table hungry. Her culinary skills were matched only by her green thumb. Laura found solace and joy in her garden, tending to her flowers with the same care she gave to her loved ones. Beyond her interests, Laura was a caregiver in the truest sense of the word. Over the years, she provided care for several family members, a role she embraced with grace and selflessness. Her capacity to love and nurture was boundless, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched. As we say goodbye to Laura Ann Perry, we reflect on a life lived with purpose and love. Her memory will continue to inspire us to live with the same generosity of spirit that she embodied every day. Bonita Lee

Age - 71

Bonita Dean Lee was born June 5, 1952, in LaFayette, Alabama. In August 2021 Bonita was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. She fought bravely and with such a positive attitude but on November 29, 2023, she lost the battle and her soul set sail to meet her Savior. Known by her co-workers as Sunshine, Bonita worked for East Alabama Paving from June 1992 until December 2022, when she was forced to retire due to her health. She could converse with the best on proper and best methods for paving roadways. She was dedicated to her work, loyal to the max to her company, and a friend to all the other employees. As much as she enjoyed her work, her first love, after her family, was her animals. Bonita raised goats - meat goats. But she would never sell them for meat, only for breeding. At her farm in Beauregard, she has a head of 40 goats. Each goat has been personally named by Bonita and she knows them all by their names. She did not just raise these goats, she feed them, vaccinated them, delivered their babies, freed them when they got in compromising situations. She loved them. Over the years she either has or has had cows, horses, donkeys, chickens, and pigs. She has 4 herding dogs, who-knows-how-many outdoor cats, a rabbit, and one little indoor 3-legged dog called Hop-along. From 1975-1977 Bonita served in the Army, stationed at Ft. Moore [Ft Benning] in Columbus, Georgia. Bonita is a member of Pierce Chapel Methodist Church. She spoke often of her faith and trust in Jesus. Bonita was proceeded in death by her parents, Alton and Irma Dean. She is survived by her husband, Andy Lee; her children Scott (Kim) Green, Derek Chandler, and Kim (Marty) Thomas; grandchildren Sarah (Brandon) Thomas, Noah Green, Gunner Thomas, Brody Thomas, Tasha Games); 3 great grandchildren George, Sebastian and Amalia; her sister Linda (Bob) Fucci and brother Michael (Ashley) Dean. The family wishes to thank Dr Brandon Johnson, Dr Ruby Powar, and all the staff of the Spencer Cancer Center for their kind and caring support through this daunting time, as well as the kind people at EAMC and the Compassus Hospice Group. Brend Herren Thrower, 79 of Opelika, AL passed away Monday, November 27th at her home. A native of Roanoke, AL, she moved to Opelika upon her marriage. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Thrower, and her parents, Maggie and Wilson Herren. This exceptional lady was a loving mom of two sons, Trey (Whitney) and Scott, and a proud grandmother of Loren and Eleanor Thrower. She is survived by her sisters, Margie Bowen and Louise Smith (Jack) and many nieces and nephews. She was a dedicated career woman, working as a hairdresser for more than 50 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed needlepoint, crossword puzzles and cooking. Vickie G. Britt, age 76 of Opelika, Alabama passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on November 27, 2023. She was born to Aubrey and Faye Gullatt on September 20, 1947 in Valley, Alabama. She was married to her husband, Richard Britt, for 38 years before he passed. Vickie devoted most of her life to caring for her family and those around her. She owned and operated a home daycare in Dadeville, Alabama for over 10 years. After closing her daycare, she joined her husband, Richard, in running their family business, Britt's Heating & Air. After retiring from the family business, she took a part time job at East Alabama Medical Center as an operator for almost 10 years. Vickie loved her family unconditionally. Watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren thrive brought her the greatest joy. She also loved Lake Martin, especially a beautiful Lake Martin sunset. She was also an avid lover of Alabama Football. Vickie is survived by her significant other of over 13 years, Ricky Renfroe; children Kim (Lee) Dauber, Richie Britt, and Shane Britt; grandchildren Hayley (Tim) Dykes, Abby (Daniel) Danley, Reed (Angel) Britt, and Cade Britt; great-grandchildren Paisley, Crew, Beckett, and Kash. She is also survived by a bonus daughter Rana (Robert) Gregg, Russell Clark, and Kayla Clark and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends who were like family. Brenda spent many years living in Opelika where she worked as a beautician. Brenda is survived by her loving husband, William Holmes, of Opelika, Al. Earl Miller Lancaster, 95, of Auburn, AL, passed away on November 22, 2023, having lived a long life, most of which he lived in Auburn. He was born in Birmingham, AL to Edwin Bragg Lancaster and Lucile Morgan Lancaster. He graduated from Lee County High School (Auburn) in 1945 and from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) in 1950 with a degree in Architecture. While a student at A. P. I. , he served as President of the Student Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (A. I. A. ) and was in the Scarab Architectural Honorary Society. He was a Life Member of the Auburn Alumni Association. He was a Corporate Member of the A. I. A. and a member of the Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, and East Alabama Chapters. He was registered as architect by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards of Certificate in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Missouri over the years of his career. Mr. Lancaster worked for architectural firms in Atlanta, GA, Macon, GA, and Birmingham, AL. He returned to Auburn in 1960 when he and his father formed Lancaster and Lancaster Architects where he practiced until his retirement. His goal as an architect was to create environments that make people happy. Mr. Lancaster served the Auburn community as Vice President, President Elect, and President of Kiwanis International and served on the Board of Directors. He served on the Auburn, AL Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and as Vice President and President. He served on the City of Auburn Planning Commission. Mr. Lancaster was a founding Director of Auburn Bank & Trust Company and continued serving as Director of SouthTrust Bank of Auburn, AL. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks. Mr. Lancaster served in the Alabama National Guard for 10 years, achieving rank of Second Lieutenant. Mr. Lancaster was a private pilot and a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was an active participant in the Auburn community track meets into his 60's. He also enjoyed photography and painting and was a bird watcher. He was an avid sports fan, particularly for Auburn University Tigers! Mr. Lancaster was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Auburn, having served as a Trustee. He previously served as a Deacon and as an Elder of Presbyterian Church USA. Mr. Lancaster sang in adult choirs for over 60 years. He served many years on building and grounds committees and oversaw numerous renovation and building projects. Mr. Lancaster was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lucille Lancaster Barclay, a nephew, Lee, and a great grandson, Dylan. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Cox Lancaster; his daughters, Lauren Walton Lancaster of Auburn, AL, and Wynn Lancaster-Brown (Keith) of Daphne, AL; stepdaughters Freda Cox Farrell of Roswell, GA, Lisa Cox Wilson (Michael) of Conyers, GA; and a stepson, Ken Cox (Lauren) of Athens, AL; grandchildren, Katie Moody (Brooks), Jonah Brown (Mihaela), Kristen Beverly (Josh), Hannah Jones (Anthony), Lena Brown, Lynn Nelson (Tommy), Brady Smith, Deborah Suggs (Evan), Beverly Keyton (John); great grandchildren, Jacob, Anthony Shonze', Emily Kate, Antwan, Lizzy, Losha, Drew, Ellae, Josh, Samuel, Naomi, Nolan, Johnny, and Ezra; great, great grandchildren Brooks and Walker; nieces, Barbara, BJ, and Nancy, and nephew, Alan, all of whom he adored. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, beginning at 10:00 AM CST. Harriet (Lisa)

Dr. Harriet Elizabeth Haynie Chappell (Lisa) stepped into the arms of Jesus on November 21, 2023, in Auburn, Alabama after a brief illness. Lisa is preceded in death by her father, Bobby Ray Haynie, and her husband of 48 years, David Bryson Chappell. Lisa was born in Opelika on July 17, 1955. She was a lifelong resident of Opelika, leaving only briefly to live in New York. Lisa's calling was to be a nurse. She graduated from Southern Union Community College with her LPN certificate in 1975, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Auburn University in 1992, a Master's Degree in Nursing from University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1995, and a PhD in Nursing Research from the Medical College of Georgia in 2007. She worked at East Alabama Medical Center for 20 years before moving into academia. She has been with Frontier Nursing University since 2009 where she was the Associate Dean of Family Nursing. She touched the lives of hundreds of people through her nursing career, and later as an educator and mentor. She was an avid reader with a large collection of books and a music lover, as well. Lisa was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, and friend. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her mother, Jane Leverett Haynie; two sons, John (Laurel) Chappell and Nathan (Kelly) Chappell; grandchildren Olivia and Bryson Chappell; siblings Linda (Tom) Caudle and Rob (Carolyn) Haynie; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 28 from 10 a. m. to 11 a. m. at Pepperell Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 11 a. m. Henry P. Messer, a beloved family man, friend, and community member, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2023, in Opelika, Alabama. Born on October 22, 1940, in Macon, Georgia, Henry lived a life full of love, laughter, and kindness. His warm spirit and infectious humor touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him. Henry was a devoted husband to his wife of 52 years, Vivian Messer. Their enduring love story was an inspiration to all who knew them, providing a strong foundation for their beautiful family. As a father to Joel, Tracy, Tommy (Amy), Nikki Lake (Darell), and Mark (Cassie). His joy was magnified by the love he had for his many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and happiness. Henry is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Kelley, and his brothers, Terry Messer (Linda) and Jerry Messer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Zelma Messer; children, Pete Messer and Patricia Wood; two sisters and four brothers. Henry's love for his family was matched only by his love for his community. He was an active member of The Bridge Church, where he was affectionately known as the church joker. His great sense of humor brought smiles and laughter to all, making every gathering a joyous occasion. His friendly demeanor and kind heart made him a beloved figure within the church community. In addition to his church activities, Henry was a passionate fan of Auburn University. His love for the game was infectious, and he enjoyed watching them with family and friends. When his children were young, he enjoyed coaching recreational football, passing on his love for the sport and his team spirit to the next generation. In remembering Henry, we celebrate a life well-lived. A life filled with laughter, love, and a deep commitment to family and community. His legacy is one of joy, kindness, and an unwavering love for others. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the remarkable man that he was, and the profound impact he had on all our lives. On Tuesday, November 21, 2023, Matthew Steven Strozier left his wheelchair and ventilator behind and walked into Heaven praising God in person. He was born on May 8, 1997 in Opelika, Alabama. He is survived by his parents, John and Tracy Strozier, his sister and very best friend, Shelby; his grandparents, Nick & Grace Abbett (Papa Nick & Nana) and John W. Strozier (Pappy); his aunts Susan (David) Voss and Cheryl Strozier. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Ellen Strozier (Grandma), his grandfather, James A. Treadwell (Granddaddy), and his uncle, Bobby Treadwell. Our family expresses our deepest gratitude to Mattman's wonderful, loving care attendant, Denese Easley. She truly became, and will continue to be a part of our family. Matt attended Southview Primary School and graduated from First Baptist Opelika Christian School in 2015. He has been a blessing and encouragement to his family, friends, and community in so many ways. Matt enjoyed many years of Miracle League baseball. He also spent lots of time at Storybook Farm riding horses. He briefly volunteered with Way 2 Serve Ministries performing data entry. Matt became a Christian on August 30, 2005 and was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church Opelika. He had a special place in his heart for his youth Bible study led by AJ Richardson and continued weekly Bible study with his close friends, and brothers in Christ, Josh Gatlin and Gunter Nawrocki. Matt also had a special bond with the Waddell family of Sharpsburg, Georgia. A life highlight for Matt was our two families going on a 14 day, out-West adventure where he was able to see the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, Yellowstone, and Mount Rushmore. His favorite part of the trip was watching Old Faithful erupt. He enjoyed attending Magic Moments Family Camp at Children's Harbor on Lake Martin each Memorial Day weekend. His visitation will be held at Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home on Sunday, November 26th from 4-6 pm. The life celebration will be held at First Baptist Church Opelika on Monday, November 27th at 11:00 with Dr. Jeff Meyers officiating. A private burial will be held.
