Walter Dunn Tucker and Jacqueline Randlette Tucker, our beloved parents, both of Richmond, Virginia, passed away after 61 years of a wonderful marriage. Jacqueline, 88, passed on April 19, 2023, and Walter followed her the very next day, on April 20, 2023. Our family is saddened to lose them, but we take comfort in knowing that this inseparable couple has now been reunited for all eternity. Walter and Jacqueline are survived by two sons, Andrew D. Tucker of Richmond, Virginia, and Bruce E. Tucker of Cherry Valley, New York; one grandson, Bryan D. Tucker of McLean, Virginia; and many cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews. Jacqueline is also survived by her sister, Mary Archer Parkerson and brother-in-law, Terry Parkerson of Richmond, Virginia. Walter was predeceased by his parents, Fred Sr. and Ethel Tucker; and brothers, Fred Tucker Jr. and Louis Tucker. Jacqueline was predeceased by her parents, Ed and Mae Randlette; and her sisters, Sarah Smith, Evelyn Hurlbut, and Patricia Christopher. Walter and Jackie were both very kind, moral, loving, and tremendously devoted to their family, their church, and their community. Both had a deep, abiding faith, and manifested that faith through deeds as well as words. After many years of attending Northminster Baptist Church together, they began attending Second Baptist Church in their later years and became integral parts of their church family. Walter served on the finance committee, taught Sunday School for many years, and often shared devotionals at youth basketball games sponsored at the church. Jackie was a devoted member of her women's circle group and volunteered for several ongoing charitable activities including clothing donations, a food pantry, and teaching English as a second language. Both were born in Richmond, Virginia- Walter in 1931, Jackie in 1934. Both attended John Marshall High School, Walter graduating in 1949, Jackie in 1953. Both attended the University of Richmond, Walter graduating in 1953, Jackie in 1957. While at UR, Walter joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity, while Jackie was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa honor society. In November 1959, Walter and Jackie both attended a postgame party at the Clover Room in Richmond to celebrate John Marshall's football victory over their archrival TJ. Following that night, Walter asked Jackie for a date, and two years later began a beautiful marriage and partnership that spanned more than six decades. Following college, Walter spent three years on active duty in the U. S. Navy, serving on the U. S. S. Betelgeuse and the U. S. S. Arneb. After being honorably discharged in 1956, he remained a member of the Naval Reserve for two decades. Walter began a long and fruitful career with State Planters Bank in 1956, and remained with the bank through many mergers and acquisitions, eventually retiring from Crestar Bank in 1994. Jackie began a teaching career after college, initially in Newport News, Virginia, and then returning to Richmond to teach at her alma mater, John Marshall High School. Following the birth of her first son, Jackie selflessly paused her teaching career to devote herself to running a household. She resumed teaching part-time in the late 1970's, eventually returning to full-time teaching at Highland Springs High School, then Hermitage High School. The bulk of her career was spent teaching Spanish. Walter was a man of many passions and pastimes, and a voracious reader and seeker of knowledge. Among his many interests were sports (particularly baseball), history, and the heritage and culture of both his native Virginia as well as England. Woe to the person who attempted to challenge his knowledge of baseball trivia. Jackie's undergraduate studies and later teaching career in Spanish sparked a lifelong love of both Mexican and Spanish art, cultural history, and music. She also was a passionate gardener and loved feeding and watching birds - her battles to keep squirrels away from her many bird feeders were the stuff of family legend. One of the great joys of Walter and Jackie's retirement years was their grandson, Bryan. They spent countless hours playing with him, reading to him, helping to raise him, and loving him with all their hearts. Both he and they were immeasurably richer for the years they got to spend together. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p. m. at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street, Glen Allen, Va. 23060. A funeral service and reception will be held at 11 a. m. on Thursday, April 27, at Second Baptist Church, 9614 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23229.
