Virginia A. Watkins, age 102, of Ranson, West Virginia died at home with her daughter, Ruth, by her side on September 8, 2023. She was born May 6, 1921, in Stanley, Virginia to Shirley and Daisy Belle Southard. Having lived a beautiful life, she will be remembered for her nurturing, uplifting spirit, her devotion to family, her selfless generosity, and her faith in God. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Shenandoah Junction. While married to her first husband, William "Bill" Miller, Virginia owned, trained, and raced thoroughbreds at Shenandoah Downs and the Charles Town Track. She loved music and dancing and was a 50+ year member of the Moose Club. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Henshaw Knill, her three granddaughters: Sonja James and friend Billy Knighten of Shepherdstown, Scarlett Hill and her husband Travis of Naples, Florida, and Sienna Ambrose and her husband Aaron of Alpine, California, and her five great grandchildren: Malek and Howard Bouzahar and Aaron, Cameron, and Madison Ambrose and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her late husband's William Miller, Wilson Smith, and James Watkins, she was preceded in death by her infant son, William Shirley Miller, and her siblings: Annie Dudley, Mida Corso, Eileen Chapman, Catherine Ryman, and Edwin Southard. The family will receive friends at Jefferson Memorial Chapel in Ranson on Sunday, September 24 from 2-4. Interment will be private at Pleasant View Gardens. Condolences may be expressed at www. Paul David Kemp, Sr. , 89, of Ranson, WV passed away Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Willow Tree Center in Charles Town, WV. Born March 14, 1934 in Frederick, MD, he was the son of the late Raymond and Eleanor Main Kemp. Paul received his Bachelors degree from Washington Bible College and his Masters in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. He was an employee of Cives Steel Corporation in Winchester with 25 years of service. His soul ambition in life was to please his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is survived by one daughter, Nellie Mae Daugherty of Roseville, CA, two sons, Paul David Kemp, Jr of Chattanooga, TN and John Philip Kemp of Bozrah, CT, four grandchildren, Zebulon, Zachary and Adam Hull and Laura Salazar and Hugo, four great-grandchildren, Mateo Emmanuel Salazar and David, Ian and Ella Hull. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen Frances Kemp in 2017, seven sisters, Jeanette Phelps, Evelyn Korrell, Virginia Musacchio, Anna Mae Stout, Ruth Sentz, Dorothy Harris and Ruby Barklow and two brothers, Raymond Kemp, Jr. and Ralph Kemp. Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV with Rev. Sam L. Martz officiating. Malcolm "Mac" James Taylor, Jr. , 79, of Ranson, died Friday, November 17, 2023 at his residence. Born April 19, 1944 in Virginia, he was the son of Ann (Kodak) and Malcolm Taylor, Sr. Mac was a landscaper by trade in his later years and maintained the grounds of the Charles Town Races. He truly enjoyed a hard days work with "the boys" from R & L. You could also say that Mac was the neighborhood grandfather, as he created close bonds with not only his grandchildren but many other neighborhood kids. He loved spending time with his family, especially his best buddy Jameson, as well as with his friends. Mac enjoyed a good cup of coffee, watching the horse races, hunting, bowling and golfing. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara (Ahalt) Taylor, at home; son Randy Taylor; daughter, Rose (Writt) Pittman and husband Robert; daughter Cherie (Taylor) Mason; grandchildren Lisa Pittman, Shane Taylor, Kayla Mason, Courtney Hampshire, Madison Mason and Taylor Pittman; great-grandchildren Trevon, Taliyah, Camden, Elizabeth, Bella, Brady, Jameson and Edwin; sister Christine "Joyce" (Taylor) Manning and husband Larry; and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Robert Writt; and brothers Timothy and Larry Taylor. Elizabeth Ann Breeden, 99, of Ranson, WV passed away Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023 surrounded by her loving family and Hospice of the Panhandle at her residence. She was born Jan. 9, 1924 in Charles Town, WV, she was the daughter of the late Lee Norman Frick and Teresa Nicely Frick. She was a loving homemaker, housewife, worked at Walnut Hill Orchard and Bright Start Daycare. She was a member of the Charles Town Baptist Church. Elizabeth was the best mother, she enjoyed walking, gardening, working in her flowers, birds, family and kids. She loved people, life and gave the best hugs. Joseph Richard Servis, 92, of Charles Town, WV passed away Tuesday, November 14th, 2023, at Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility, Kearneysville, WV. He was born August 3rd, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of the late Frederick Servis and Anna Mae Hanna Servis. He was Chief Steward Judge in Horse Racing in WV, PA, NJ, primarily in WV, where he enforced the rules of horse racing. For 11 years prior he was a Thoroughbred Jockey winning over 500 races. After retirement he became the Manager of the Jockeys Guild for 11 years. He was a member of St. James the Greater Catholic Church. He was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose 948, Sleepy Hollow Country Club and the Jockeys Guild of America. He was inducted in 2010 into the Charles Town Racing Hall of Fame. He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Dolores (Scalzi) Servis; children, Laurie Plesa (Edward), of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Jason Servis (Natalie), John Servis (Sherry), both of Florida, Jodie Servis (Forest Weiant), of Bunker Hill, WV; grandchildren, Luke, Kyle, Evan, Blane, Logan, Garrett, Tyler, Kelsey, Victoria, Olivia; 11 great-grandchildren; 6 nieces. Richard Dean Carper, Sr. , 95, of Ranson, WV passed away Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023 at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility, Kearneysville, WV. Richard was born April 10, 1928 in Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late William F. Carper, Sr. and Grace Elizabeth Glaize Carper. After retiring from the Doubleday Book Company in Berryville, VA, as a Press Operator, he worked at Community Oil Company, then at the Magnolia Tree delivering flowers. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church where he had served as Head Usher for 43 years. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Malta Lodge #80 in Charles Town, WV, where he had served as Secretary for 50 years, Loyal Order of the Moose 948, VFW Post 3522, Jackson-Perks American Legion Post 71 and the Independent Fire Company. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years and 7 months, Mary C. Carper; children, Richard Carper, Jr. (Barbara); Susan Waters (Larry), Steve Carper (Robin), Terry Carper (Amber), Rebecca Hitrik (Tim), Charles Goode (Anne), all of Jefferson County, WV; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Mary Virginia Engle, 76, of Bunker Hill, WV passed away Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023 at Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility, Kearneysville, WV. Mary was born Aug. 23, 1947 in Charles Town, WV. She was the daughter of the late Millard C. "Jock" Engle and Virginia I. (Wood) Engle. She was of the Methodist Faith. Mary graduated from the Charles Town High School, class of 1967. She is survived by her sisters, Barbara J. Long, of Ranson, WV and Wanda Hill, of Charles Town, WV and lots of extended family and friends. Even though she didn't have children of her own, she was a big helping hand in caring for her sibling's children: Paula, Michelle, Kendall, Roxanne, Lucy, Tammy, Clayton, Abbie, Missy, Becky, Leslie, Donnie, Billy Joe, Kindra, Millard, Jr. , Michael and many other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Millard Lee Engle, Sr, sisters, Linda Capozio, Patricia Darr, Shirley Himes, nieces, Sherry Ramey, Carla Hill, Paula Hill, nephew, Samuel Hardy and brother-in-law Darryl Hill.
