Virginia "Jenny" Staton went Home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 8th, 2023 in the Life Care Center of Banner Elk. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Bynum and Edna Hartley Brewer. Jenny was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Steward Staton, who passed away in 2005; her daughter, Laura Ann Staton, who passed away in 1985; a son, Paul Edward Staton, who passed away in 2015; her brother, JB Brewer and a sister, Mary Ellen Partington. Jenny was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She had a devout love for her church and church family. She enjoyed working in her flower garden, canning and feeding everyone that came to visit. Surviving are her sons: Joe Staton and wife, Marie, of Lexington, and Jimmy Staton of Newland; four grandchildren: Patricia Staton, Shannon Staton, Joe Staton II and James Strickland; several great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Nina Mae Carswell and Ann Turbyfill (Willie). Also surviving are her church family and many friends. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p. m. on Tuesday, September 12th at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Pastor Remington Austin will officiate. Interment will follow in the Carpenter Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p. m. prior to the service at the church.

Johnny Lee Townsend, age 87, of Banner Elk, the Foscoe Community, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 11, 2023. Johnny was born on January 31, 1936 in Watauga County, North Carolina, the son of the late Enzer Townsend and Clemmie Byrd Townsend. He was the youngest of twelve children. Johnny was an active member of Watauga Baptist Church for the past 65 years. He served the church in many capacities including Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He was an US Army veteran. Johnny was an avid hunter and fisherman. You could find him in his camo scouting out the largest buck, or by the river sneaking up on the biggest fish. He had a passion for working with his hands, an expert at all things gardening and farming. He enjoyed spending time visiting with those close to him, sharing memories and stories. He loved and adored his family, but most of all he loved the Lord. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Shook Townsend; his nine brothers, Melvin, Fred, Vance, Robert (Bob), Mack, Ray, Floyd Glenn and Bill Townsend; two sisters, Ada Schreffler and Beulah Gregory. Johnny is survived by one son, Kenneth Townsend and wife Lisa of Banner Elk; Granddaughter, Spencer Shuford and husband Taylor of Boone; one great-grandson, Tate Shuford, and one great granddaughter Emmie Shuford (who will arrive into this world very soon). He is also survived by sister-in-law Rachel Townsend of Banner Elk; special cousin Jerry Welch, and many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 15, 2023 at 2:00 p. m. in Watauga Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Michael "Mike" Houser, age 51, of Banner Elk, passed away on Saturday, September 30th, 2023. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late William and Shirley Walker Houser. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Linda Greene. Mike enjoyed working with his hands building and mechanicing, he could build or fix anything. Mike's greatest enjoyment in life was casting a line, whether it was from the banks of the Elk River or from the sand at the Outer Banks. Second to his love of fishing came the enjoyment of mowing the lawn. He loved his dogs and especially his family. Beginning as high school sweethearts, Mike and Melinda never fell out of love with each other even though life lead separate routes for them. Thirty years later, they were reunited and began building a beautiful life together. Left to cherish his memories is his life partner, Melinda Teaster Williams; children: Alora Allison (Joe) of New Jersey, Aaron Williams (Brooke) of Banner Elk, Ashley Houser (Chakotay) of Roan Mountain, TN and Tyler Houser (Stephanie) also of Roan Mountain; grandchildren: Aidan, Lillian, Gio, Luca, Natalie, Annah, Kingston and Laken; sisters: Sue Dale, Kaye Towery and Lisa Roddy; brothers: Donald Houser, Ronald Houser and Gregory Roddy; special niece, Audrey Houser and special nephew, Brandon Hedden. Per Mike's wishes, his ashes will be scattered in his favorite fishing locations. A private family gathering will be held to honor and celebrate Mike's life on the coast of North Carolina.Show more

Obituary of Evelyn Main Evelyn Eggers Main, age 63, of Dutch Creek Road, Banner Elk, passed away Thursday morning, October 5, 2021 at her home. Born January 3, 1958 in Watauga County, she was a daughter of Hoover and Mary Eggers. Evelyn's family was her passion and she had a special place in her heart for her beloved grandchildren. She dearly loved raising her family and preparing meals for them from the vegetables she canned from her annual gardens. She developed a special bond with her mother as they would often be found sewing and piecing quilts together. Evelyn is survived by her husband, Roy Lee Main; daughter, Catherine Tester and husband, James, of Banner Elk; son, James Main and wife, Crystal, of Boone; grandchildren, Hunter, Elizabeth and Rayleigh Tester and Landon Main; special brother and sister-in-law, Tracy Eggers and wife, Annette, of Valle Crucis; brother, Steve Eggers of Banner Elk; special niece, Brittney Forrester; her mother and father-in-law, Emily and Dan Main of Boone; and her special church families from Westside Baptist Church and Clark's Creek Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jane Presnell. Funeral services for Evelyn Main will be conducted Thursday afternoon, October 7th at 2 o'clock at Clark's Creek Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. David Lunceford, Rev. David Ward and Mitchell Yates. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 until 2 o'clock, prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow in the Matney-Liberty Cemetery.
