Virginia E. Dougherty, 81, passed away September 9, 2023, at Stone Crest Assisted Living in Freeland. She was born April 29, 1942, in Bay City, the second child of Mathias and Mildred (Bradley) Forbes. Her family moved to Midland when she was young, later moving to the family farm on Pine River Road. Virginia was a 1960 graduate of Breckenridge High School. She retired from the Dow Chemical Company, then worked for a dental office for a few years before fully retiring to babysit her grandchildren. While her daughters were young, she was active as a Girl Scout Troop Leader and a busy homemaker. She enjoyed attending band concerts and musical performances. She was known to always bring a laugh and fun times to many occasions. She is survived by her daughters, Lisa (Earl Jerzyk) Dougherty, Amy (Kevin) Russell, Cara Dougherty (Dennis Mohowitsch), Jody (Jim Hagerman) Dougherty; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Hannah Jerzyk, Madilyn Jerzyk, Andrew Russell, Justin (Megan Troung) Russell, Hayley Russell, Bradley (MaKayla) Lackie, Blaire Lackie, Faith Brookover, Lauren Hagerman, Olivia (David) Crum, Veronica Crum, Harper Crum; a sister Kathy Yoder, a brother Tom (Jill) Forbes, sister-in-law Kathy Forbes, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family of Thomas Dougherty. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Mick and his wife Bonnie Forbes, her brother Bob Forbes, and a niece Kristine Plont. The family would like to thank everyone at Stone Crest, and at Care Line Hospice for their compassionate care. Funeral services for Virginia will take place 5 p. m. Friday, September 15, 2023, from the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 West Wheeler Street, with Pastor Cathy Christman officiating. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 2 p. m. until the time of services. Private family inurnment will take place later in Porter Township Cemetery. Naomi Rose Cook, age 25, finished her journey on December 1, 2023. Naomi was born at home on March 8, 1998 as the ninth child of Leon and Wendy Cook. As the youngest in the family, Naomi loved to plan events and always wanted to know where her siblings were. Naomi loved the outdoors and delighted in kayaking, driving her UTV, exploring waterfalls and lighthouses, or simply walking on the family farm. Naomi's life was cut short by the diagnosis of Stage IV breast cancer at age 22. The same week as her diagnosis, she received her business degree in Marketing from Saginaw Valley State University. Though unable to work a full-time job after graduation, Naomi used her design and marketing skills to start her own quilling business, Cards by Naomi Rose. Naomi also used her expertise on the family farm where she grew up, Cook's Choice Produce, and as a vendor at the Midland Area Farmers' Market. The well-loved family of Naomi is parents Leon and Wendy (Nelson) Cook of Midland; and siblings Aaron (Lauren) of Merrill; Amy of Midland; Joel (Judith) of Akron, PA; Julie of Mechanicsburg, PA; Betsy (Josh) Reames of Midland; Brian of Midland; Libby of Midland and Logan (Emma) of St. Louis, MO. Nephews and nieces were a major part of her life since becoming an aunt at the age of 10. She dearly loved Kaelyn, Janessa, Austin and Jirah Cook, Abel, Cyrus, Kathryn and Michael Reames, and Grayson Cook. She will also be greatly missed by her friends Amanda Byler, Kathryn Byler and Eva Zastrow. While enduring cancer treatment, Naomi looked forward to the great reunion in heaven with her Sunday School teacher Bruce Byler, former Pastor Jimmy Lang and her grandparents who preceded her in death. Naomi's attitude throughout her battle with cancer was an inspiring testimony for all to see her love and trust in Jesus. Funeral services for Naomi will take place 11 a. m. Thursday, December 7, 2023 from the Midland Reformed Church, 1100 N. Saginaw Rd. Naomi's family will receive friends Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p. m. at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, and at the church on Thursday morning from 10 a. m. until time of services. Jordan Leah Shaver of Midland, Michigan, loving daughter of Jeffrey Sr. and Lois (Simmer) Shaver passed away unexpectedly on November 29, 2023. She was born on May 7, 1989, in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Jordan is survived by her mother Lois Ann (Simmer) Shaver; her brother Jeffrey Shaver Jr. (Sara) and Austin Shaver; her sisters Jessica Endres (Matt) and Jenna Coates; and loving aunts, uncles, nephew, nieces, cousins, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her father Jeffrey David Shaver Sr. Jordan was known for her thoughtfulness, love for her family, and sharing her imaginative artistic hobbies, especially with her nephew and many nieces. Jordan's kindness extended to her beloved pets and many wildlife animals. She is deeply missed by all her family and friends. A private celebration of life will be held at a future date. Roger Patrick Mercer, age 48, of Midland, Michigan, peacefully went to Heaven on Monday, November 27, 2023. He was born on September 2, 1975. Roger grew up in Troy, Michigan. He graduated from Sterling Heights High School. Roger loved his family and friends. Destiny, his daughter was the light of his life. Roger loved to laugh and enjoyed expressing himself through artwork. He will be sorely missed. Roger was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Dorothy Mercer; sister Karen Mercer; niece Nicole Penwarden; brothers Gary Mercer and James Mercer. Roger is survived by his daughter, Destiny Mercer; sister Lesa Penwarden & Robert McGee; brothers Scott Mercer & Jan; Timothy Mercer and Leonard Mercer; Mark & Jessica Penwarden; Michelle Mercer and Family; Grady Mercer; many Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Terry Lee Parsons, 63, of Midland, died unexpectedly the afternoon of Sunday, November 26, 2023, at the MyMichigan Medical Center, Midland. Son of the late Maynard and Helen (Coggins) Parsons, Terry was born in Midland on September 21, 1960. Terry was a wrecker driver for many years, and was still a dedicated driver for Green's Towing out of Mt. Pleasant. He was a very hard worker and touched the lives of many. On March 11, 1994, Terry married the love of his life, the former Lucinda Atherton, and they shared 40 happy years together. Terry's top priority were his children and grandchildren, always being there for sports and special events. He was a good husband and devoted to his family. Terry also enjoyed drag racing and working on fast cars. In addition to his spouse, Lucinda, Terry is survived by his children, Justin (Jessica) Atherton, Adrienne (partner Kyle) Arthur, and Kayla Parsons; grandchildren, Gage, Gavin, Rylee, Kaylee, Ailee, and Jaren; and 3 great granddaughters. Terry will also be missed by siblings, Michael (Linda) Parsons, David (Carrie) Parsons, Patti (Mark) Kloha, and Paula (the late Tom) Doyle; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that he loved dearly. PUNG, Ronald Albert - of Clio, age 85, died Sunday, November 19, 2023 at Olson Manor in Midland, Michigan. Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at SS. Charles and Helena Catholic Church. Rev Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating. Cremation to follow. The family will receive visitors on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio and at the church from 10AM until time of mass. Ronald was born April 22, 1938 in Ionia, Michigan to the late Leo and Josephine (Smith) Pung. He grew up in Westphalia, Michigan and attended school there. Ronald proudly served his country in the US Army from 1961 to 1963. On July 25, 1971 he married Jacqueline Hagerty in Zilwaukee, Michigan and she preceded him in death on May 16, 2019. Prior to his retirement in 1997, Ronald worked as a Crane Operator with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324 with 34 years of service. He was a member of the SS. Charles and Helena Catholic Church, the St. Joseph Men's Group and helped with funeral luncheons at the church. Ronald loved tractors, bird watching, especially the blue birds, and volunteering at St. Luke N. E. W. Life Center. He enjoyed going to Menards, fixing things, and spending time at his cabin in Kaleva, Michigan. Ronald was a Devout Catholic with a strong faith. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2890. However, one of his greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren and their friends. The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the amazing staff at Olson Manor for the love and care they provided to Ron. Rosaline Roberts

Age - 95

ROSALINE "ROZ" (BEDENKO) ROBERTS, 95Rosaline "Roz" Bedenko Roberts was born on September 5, 1928 in Detroit Michigan and passed peacefully on November 18, 2023 at the age of 95. Roz received an associate degree from Detroit Business University and worked for Ford Motor Company for several years before moving to Midland, MI in 1976. Roz and David loved square dancing where they were members of the Silver Square Dance Club. Roz volunteered at the hospital gift shop and food pantry, delivered meals for the Council on Aging's Happy Dinners, and served as a Deacon at Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was also a 35-year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, a charter member of the Red Hat Society's "Brats in Red Hats", as well as a member of the senior bowling league. She was predeceased by her husband of over 55 years, David Roberts, and survived by her children, Marie Keidel and Matthew (Holly) Roberts, granddaughters Rebecca Keidel, Morgan (Wade) McQueen, and Alexandra Roberts, and great-grandchildren Derrick and Mariana Fisher and Sophia McQueen. Melvin Hoenicke

Age - 95

Melvin W. Hoenicke, age 95, of Midland, died the evening of Sunday, November 19, 2023, at his home. Melvin was born on August 21, 1928, in Larkin Township, Midland County, to Erich Martin Richard and Johanna (Lebutzke) Hoenicke. He lived in Midland all of his life. Melvin served with the U. S. Army, 149 Field Artillery, in Germany during the Korean War, and worked as a machinist for W & W Tool and Die in Midland, and Breza & Spaulding Die Shop in Linwood, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Rhythm Aires Band, Sanford American Legion, Midland VFW, and Midland Antique Engine Club. Melvin (with late-wife, Rosie) organized a country western band, 'The Rhythm Aires', with his best friends, Dale and Mary Stevens. The band played for many weddings and other special occasions for over 50 years, and performed for 15 years at dances organized by Clyde "Red" Randall for the special needs groups in the Midland Area. Melvin enjoyed restoring antique Farmall and John Deere tractors, showing them at the Midland River Days, during the Midland Fair and at the Midland Antique Engine Club show each year in July. He often drove them, with his stepson Jerry Krueger, in the Memorial Day Parade in Midland, the Memorial Day and Founder's Day parades in Sanford, and the Auburn Corn Festival parade. Melvin is survived by his wife, Carol Kay (Love) Grant; stepchildren, Jerry (Lois) Krueger, Betty Campbell and stepdaughter-in-law, Marge Krueger and Kenn, Kevin, Kris, Kirk and Kim Costley; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; sister-in law Ethel Hoenicke; nieces and nephews, many cousins and numerous close friends. Melvin was predeceased by his parents; wife, Rosa (Murphy) (Krueger) Hoenicke, stepson, Tom Krueger, brother Kenneth and brothers and sisters-in-law, Clarence and Ann Hoenicke, Fred and Mary Hoenicke, Edward Hoenicke, Ray Love and Rick and Charlene Love. Per Melvin's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a graveside inurnment will be held at the Midland Memorial Gardens, next to his wife, Rosie. Vickie Boeke, 71, passed away unexpectedly on November 19th, 2023. She is survived by her husband, Bob, of Gladwin, MI, and her daughter, Robyn Boeke, of Hampton, Virginia. She also leaves behind a newly acquired Golden Retriever named Ben, who is a loving and wonderful friend. Vickie attended Delta College earning an associate degree in Business Management with honors, and Central Michigan University, earning almost enough credits for a bachelor's degree, but chose to marry her loving husband of 50 years, Bob, and work in many retail establishments, most recently Pier One. Vickie is known by her many friends as fun-loving, outgoing, and generous- always willing to help others. She was passionate in her love for animals, preserving the environment, working out and taking classes at the Midland Community Center. She was a remarkable athlete as well. Her favorite hobby was buying and selling antiques, although many still remain in her home up north on Secord Lake. Funeral services will take place at Ware-Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeeler Street, Midland, MI at 1:00 p. m. on Tuesday, November 28th, with visiting hours from 11:00 a. m. until the service. Courtney Fillmore

Age - 98

Courtney Fillmore, 98, lifelong Hope resident, died peacefully in his home of 75 years on Thursday, November 16, 2023. Courtney was born on October 22, 1925 in Hope, the second of four sons, to the late Cecil and Wilma (Miller) Fillmore. Growing up in depression-era times, he was not afraid of hard work. He worked along side his dad and brothers keeping the family farm running. He was hired by the Dow Chemical Company in April 1943. Courtney pridefully served his country in World War II in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946. After he was honorably discharged, he returned to the family farm in Hope. He married Marilyn Joan Henry on July 23, 1948. Together they raised their four children on their 1861 homestead, built by his great-grandparents. Courtney and Marilyn enjoyed 65 years together until Marilyn's death in 2013. Courtney was active in his community and served as the Hope Township Treasurer for 24 years. He was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church for over 80 years and a member of the American Legion Post #165 for over 50 years. After Courtney's retirement in 1982, he and Marilyn spent their time gardening, fishing, camping, playing cards, and spending time with their grandchildren. Every harvest season, Courtney was generous with the bountiful fruits of his labor from his three massive gardens. He was often seen working in his gardens or mowing his yard as recently as this past summer. Courtney was a true patriot who proudly served his country, his community, and his family with great distinction and care. A life well lived by an extraordinary man. Those left to carry-on his heritage are daughters; Carolyn (Roger) Trudgen, Lori (Glenn) Wilkinson, and by his son; Bruce (Cindy) Fillmore. His legacy includes 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are his special friend Marcia Maxwell and her family, brother Tom (Betty) Fillmore, sister-in-law Phyllis Fillmore-Miller and many special nieces, nephews, and friends. In addition to his parents and his wife Marilyn, Courtney was predeceased by his daughter Gail, great-grandson Darren, brother Dewitt, nephews Bill and Don Fillmore, niece Kim Fillmore-Brown, and great nephew Billy Geiling. Funeral services for Courtney will take place at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church, 315 W. Larkin St. , Midland, MI. Pastor Bill Cleland and Rev. Dr. Jeff Maxwell will officiate the service with burial in the New Hope Cemetery with full military honors. Courtney's family will receive friends at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. "Ellen Jane (Rutter) Smith formerly of Columbia, Missouri and Midland, Michigan, passed away on October 9, 2023 at the age of 91. She was born on October 1, 1932 in Columbia, Missouri to James and Gertie Rutter. She was the youngest of 2 children and was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, Ray Smith, her brother, Charles Rutter and her sister in law June Rutter. Jane is survived by her children, son Michael (Lisa) Smith of Minnesota, son Jeffrey (Sherolyn) Smith of Texas and daughter Pamela (Todd) Smith Bellaver of Michigan as well as 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Always going by her middle name, Jane graduated from David Henry Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri and attended the University of Missouri receiving her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. Jane met her future husband on a blind date while attending Mizzou and they married in 1954. Shortly after they were married, Ray left to serve in the Korean War. Upon his return, they moved to W. LaFayette, Indiana where Jane worked at the Purdue University pre-school while Ray completed a Master's degree. After he graduated, Ray and Jane moved to Midland, Michigan for his new job at Dow Chemical Company. They lived in Midland for 44 years raising their 3 children while Jane worked as a teacher in the Midland Public School system. When she retired from teaching, she and Ray enjoyed many years of retirement and eventually left Midland returning to Columbia, MO where they lived for 17 years. They spent time traveling sometimes with their camper and eventually without. They enjoyed playing cards, going on bike rides, taking hikes in State and National Parks, being involved in local organizations and clubs, volunteering, gardening, working in the yard, visiting with friends and family, and spending time with their children and grandchildren who brought them both so much joy. After Ray's passing in 2020, Jane moved to Weatherford, Texas to live with her son Jeff and daughter in law Sherolyn where she received the best care imaginable and held the important role of family elder with a wink and smile while "demanding" a slice of chocolate pie on a whim. Jane was always ready to play a round of Missouri Rummy or Hand and Foot while also living her retirement years with her favorite motto, "Have suitcase, will travel. " Jane and Ray were fortunate to travel to many of their bucket list locations and had many great adventures together. A memorial service for Jane will be scheduled at a later date at Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Columbia, Missouri.
