Julie, 77, fought a brave battle against brain cancer while under hospice care. A cherished mother, esteemed newspaper journalist, and dedicated volunteer, Julie held the title of "grandma" most dear, embodying the role of matriarch for her family. Survived by her children Megan Green and Ryan Green, grandsons Milo and Julian, and siblings Jim Ryan, Margo Peck, Barney Ryan, Mary Ryan, and Matt Ryan. Preceded in death by her husband Tom Green, parents Clair and Julia Ryan, and brothers Tim Ryan and Mark Ryan. Julie's journalism career spanned prestigious publications, including the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and the Los Angeles Times, where she contributed to a team awarded the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news. Her commitment extended beyond journalism, as she received the Volunteer Service Award from Catholic Charities of Los Angeles for her work at the Guadalupe Community Center's food pantry. Known for her love of movies, theater, and politics, Julie's absolute highlights were family gatherings, where her hearty laugh, quick wit, and generous spirit shone brightest. As we fondly recall these moments, may Julie Ryan Green rest in peace, forever remembered for her love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to family and community.

She is survived by her four children, Thomas, Alice (Nick) Lucca, Annette (Vince) Rizzo, and Madelynn (Rick) Brossard, 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lincoln, her parents Ann and Joseph Mortellaro, brother Angelo, brother-in-law Edward (Marion), Levon (Mary Ellen), sister-in-law Dorothy (Benny), and in-laws Tom and Alice Tamraz. Thomas is survived by his Mother Sieglinde Almeida and husband Mike, Sister Kreszentia Morris-Opana and husband Phelix, Sister and Bestfriend Heidi Mason-Sotomayor and husband Orlando, Brother Gary L Mason and wife Cindy, Sister Michelle Morris, Sister Tanya Mason-Capalla, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was an Airman First Class. He worked for the City of Chicago at the Water Department for many years. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree in History. Thomas was an exemplary brother, son, cousin, uncle, nephew, friend, and human being. He embodied the best of qualities; unconditional love, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity that could be seen by all that loved him. He accepted everyone with an open heart, open arms, and a huge smile. Thomas had a love for the Theatre and music, always posting a song in reference to the mood he was feeling. He is and always will be a guiding light, an open book with various scenarios that convey his love for spiritual advice and referencing his life experiences and stories. He loved to find new recipes to share with his close family and friends. He had a love for sports. His favorite football team was the Chicago Bears. He loved to fish and he was looking forward to his retirement. His departure was a great shock and deep wound and it is greatly felt by his entire family and countless others who loved him deeply in his wide network of community.
