Ernest Verni Carter (Vern), Husband, Father, Grandfather, Retired Naval Officer, Friend, and World Traveler was born in Dunsmuir, California on February 21st, 1940 where he was proud to call home. He shared many fond memories of growing up in Dunsmuir and still to this day had a fantastic group of lifelong friends. He attended California State University at Chico for college, enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in a variety of places during his active service. He lived in Northern California for many years, and in July 1986, moved to Bakersfield, California with his family. Vern was proud of his Italian heritage and lived for the adventure. He loved traveling and made many lifelong friends along the way who loved him dearly. Vern loved to talk and share stories about his experiences, world happenings, politics, and more. He had a knack for facts and carried so much knowledge. He was a proud American and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. Vern met the love of his life in San Francisco, and they were married September 13th, 1969 in Ogden, Utah. Vern and Sue were married for a wonderful 53 years and had two sons. He had two successful careers, the Navy and Insurance, and they traveled the world together. He was proud to have travelled to all 7 continents, 89 countries and 49 states, he loved every single minute of his travels. He and Sue made many, many beautiful memories along the way. He was a proud and caring father and always thought of his family first. The family spent much of their time in Utah with family by the river where he taught his grandchildren to throw rocks, care for the land, the "old fashioned" ways, and of course to pull his finger. Vern became a grandfather in 2010, and boy did he have a soft spot for those kids (3), doing anything and everything they wanted to do with Papa. They brought so much joy and pride to his life, seeing them grow, making spaghetti sauce with them, watching them achieve successes in school and sports, just spending time with the kids lite up his world. He was first and forevermore a family man. On Wednesday, April 19th, 2023, Vern took his final breath and joined loved ones that preceded him, his parents (Ernest/Dede), brother (Noel), and some very close friends. He leaves behind his wife Suzann, his son Dean and wife Kim, his son Nathan and wife Shauna, his three pride and joy grandchildren, Austin, Maddy, and Daelon, as well as extended family and many very close friends. He will always remain in our hearts, never be forgotten, and his adventure will live on in all of us. Go Niners! The family would like to thank Dr. Jorge Del Toro and his amazing staff for the 30 years of amazing healthcare and friendship, as well as the entire staff at Hoffman Hospice for their care and love during Vern's final months, you made Vern and the family feel so special. Services will take place on Monday, May 8th at 1pm at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary located at 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, California 93306.
