Martha Montgomery Pennington

Martha Montgomery Pennington, daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, went home to her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer. Martha was born in Beekman, LA in 1944 to Rosco and Elsie Montgomery, the middle of 5 siblings. She attended Beekman Elementary and Bastrop High School, where she graduated in 1962. She worked various jobs until working for Dr. Ted Pollard, where she remained until she met the love of her life, Lurrell Pennington. They married in 1965 and moved to Crossett, where she remained until her death. She worked at Leisure Lodge nursing home, where she attained her certification as a diet manager and food protection professional. She later became manager of food service for the Crossett School District, until she retired in 2006. Martha, also lovingly known as Granny or Aunt Mott, loved spending time with her family, children, and grandchildren. When her kids were little, many weekends were spent camping and fishing at Lake Chicot. She enjoyed traveling and continued to fish as often as she could. She loved her family at South Main Baptist Church. She served her church family as a greeter and was involved in various other church committees. She remained active in her church until her passing. She is survived by 2 sons, Jamey and wife Julie of Tifton, GA; Scott and wife Milissa of Crossett; daughter Phyllis Kovar of Lufkin, TX; 13 grandchildren, 30+ great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; 3 brothers Buddy, Gene, and Terry Montgomery. She is preceded in death by her parents Rosco and Elsie Montgomery, father and mother-in-law Coy Ed and Louise Pennington, husband Lurrell Pennington, infant son, sister Ida Gentry, son-in-law Charles Kovar, 2 brothers-in-law Butch and Charles Pennington and sister-in-law Pam Montgomery. Visiting hours are Tuesday, March 5th between 5:00-7:00 pm at South Main Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at South Main Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 6th at 1:00 pm. Pallbearers will be Mike Pennington, Craig Pennington, Shane Montgomery, Benji Price, Chris Leonard and Jeff Harrison. Honorary pallbearers are Dakotah Pennington, Colin Pennington, Chad Kovar, Jonathan Kovar, Taylor Kovar, David Kovar, Kevin Kovar, Kyle Kovar, Scott Pullin and Cheyene Williamson. The family would like to thank all her caregivers, especially Hope at Home and Hospice Home Care in Monticello. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to Hope at Home. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourself, [it is] the gift of God. Following a sermon on this verse, Martha was saved and baptized. Jaylon Darnell Brown, age 22 transitioned on February 27, 2024 at Ashley County Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Crossett, AR, an employee of Johnny's Pizza House, and a member of Phillip Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Horace Ingram, Sr., and his paternal grandmother, Darlene Brown. Jaylon was a devoted, loving and respectful son who loved music and playing basketball. He is survived by his parents, Edward and Krissie Brown , one brother, Jataevous Brown, one sister, Ja'Nya Brown, all of Crossett, AR, maternal grandmother, Gerlie Ingram of Hamburg, AR, paternal grandfather and step- grandmother Paul and Sandra Brown of Crossett, and several other relatives and friends. Funeral service is Sunday, March 3, 2024, graveside at Westview Cemetery at 2:30 P.M. with Pastor Horace Ingram, Jr. officiating. Lynnetta Ruth Fowler, 82, of Crossett, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. She was born in Minden, Louisiana on December 6, 1941, to her parents, Dick and Gertrude Atwell. A proud 1960 graduate of Crossett High School, Lynnetta went on to pursue her passion for history at the University of Arkansas, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. At U of A, she was a proud member of Alpha Delta Phi and even graced the campus as a Razorback Beauty. Beyond her professional roles as a social worker and teacher for several years, Lynnetta was a fantastic mother and housewife, creating a warm and loving home for her family, the neighborhood children, to whom she provided comfort and guidance, and her beloved grandchildren who stole her heart. She was a fabulous cook, an avid reader, and a serious movie buff. She also enjoyed coffee time with her girlfriends and spending quality time with her family. Lynnetta dedicated herself to her faith as a devout member and deaconess at Freedom Ministries, where she found solace and community. Her unwavering love for the Lord, Jesus Christ, was evident in every aspect of her life. Her joyful spirit and radiant smile brightened the lives of those around her. She faced life's challenges with a joyous heart, never complaining but instead spreading warmth and happiness wherever she went. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her two brothers, David Gail Atwell, and Richard “Dickey” Atwell. She leaves behind her husband of fifty-nine years, Earnest Wesley Fowler, of Crossett; one son, David Wesley Fowler (Lidia Adriana) of Springdale; and one daughter, Kelly Suzan Anderson (Jim) of Monroe, LA; along with one sister, Martha Ann Atwell of El Dorado, AR; six grandchildren, Maggie and Peyton Remoy, and Hezrai Wesley, Enoch Eliam, Jahleel Abiezer, and Jahdiel Elhanan Fowler; one nephew, Scott Harrison; and three nieces, Terri Ewing (John), Tammie Lust (Greg), and Tracie Rust (Robert). A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, February 23rd, at Freedom Ministries, 221 West Pierce St. in Crossett, with Pastor Robert Jones, and David Fowler, officiating, followed by interment at Crossroads Cemetery under the direction of Medders Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Hezrai and Enoch Fowler, Keith Cooper, Andy Minga, Christian Hamilton, and Paul Brown. Honorary pallbearers are Bob Vickers and Jim Anderson. Sybil Graves, 96, of Hamburg, died Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at the Nightingale at Crossett Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Graves was a native of Leaksville, Mississippi, a resident of Crossett for the past eight years, and a former resident of Hamburg and Fountain Hill for many years. She took on the role of the head of her household at an early age, raising her children and working at a boat factory and as a Machine Operator at the Hamburg Shirt Factory. Mrs. Graves was a member of the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church. She had a heart of gold and was always willing to help others. She enjoyed painting, crocheting, and spending time with her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Curtis Graves in 1978; two daughters, Jan Bankston-Crain in 2023 and Ruth McDougald in 1978; two grandsons, Russell Kelley and Steve Stephenson; two infant grandsons, Lance McDougald and Michael McDougald; her parents, Aubrey and Missouria Hillman Gardner; three sisters, her twin, Sylvia Lucius, Alma Almond and Faye Worthington; two brothers, Dean Gardner and Charlie Gardner and a son-in-law, Ralph Jackson. She is survived by three daughters, Brenda Jackson and Judy Jackson and husband, Byron, all of Crossett and Betty Adams and husband, Dale, of Hamburg; two sons, Joe Dean Graves and wife, Jane, of Mountain Home and Terry Graves and wife, Sheila, of Junction City; a brother, Bobby Gardner and wife, Deloris, of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Jean Smith and Ruby Averrett, both of Houston, Texas and Shirley Barlow of Alabama; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services are 2 p.m., Friday, February 23, 2024 at the Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Elton officiating. Burial will be in the Flat Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers are Zachary Jackson, Scott Stephenson, Jason McDougald, Octaviano Mondragon, Jonathan Pearcy, Lucas Graves and T.C. Graves. Honorary pallbearers are Maddox Carney and Briar Jackson. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m., Friday, in the funeral home chapel.

James “Clovis” Dean, age 67, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. He was born on September 6, 1956, was a lifelong resident of Crossett, and a member of the Community of Christ Church. A proud graduate of Crossett High School in 1974, Clovis went on to achieve an associate degree in Electrical and Instrumentation from Forest Echoes. His professional journey spanned over four decades, which he dedicated to Georgia Pacific, until his well-deserved retirement. Clovis enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid Arkansas Razorback fan, his enthusiasm for the team was unmatched, supporting them in all sports. To his family, Clovis was a rock. Always full of love, support, and strength. His loyalty was evident in every aspect of his life. Clovis was a devoted family man, whose greatest joy was found in caring for his beloved granddaughter, Maeve, whose laughter brought light and warmth to his heart. In addition, Clovis was a faithful friend, always there to lend a helping hand or offer a comforting word. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Marshall and Kathryn Jones Dean; two brother-in-laws, Jerry Pennington and Curtis Gulledge; one nephew, Matt Gulledge; and one great-niece, Reagan Richardson. He leaves behind his son, Brad Dean (Aimee) of Crossett; and four sisters, Donna Pennington of Quincy, IL, Debra Lochala of Hector, AR, Lisa Gulledge (Gene Watt) of Crossett, and Rhonda Barnes (Andy) of Hamburg; along with his beloved granddaughter, Maeve Dean; and a host of nieces and nephews who thought he hung the moon. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 23rd, at Medders Funeral Home, 1564 Hwy 52 W, in Crossett, with Elders, Elllis Lewis and Greg McManus officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Thursday, at Medders Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hope at Home.

Ethel M. Woods, 83, of Hamburg, died Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Nightingale at Crossett. Mrs. Woods was a native and lifelong resident of Hamburg. She enjoyed the fellowhip of her friends and church families of both Martinville Baptist Church and Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Robert Woods in 2000; a daughter, Charlotte Woods in 2015; her parents, Andrew and Evangeline McCurdy Kelley; a brother, Harrol Lee Kelley and a sister, Barbara Kelley Land. She is survived by two sons, Mark Woods and wife, Pam, of Valley Grande, Alabama and Neal Woods and wife, Penny, of Hamburg; a daughter, Debra Woods of Ingleside, Texas; a brother, Kenneth Kelley of California; eight grandchildren, Samantha Muro, Ashley Woods, Jessie N. Woods, Bobby Woods, Christina Woods, Steven Woods, Summer Carrier and Haley-Jo Cox; a step-granddaughter, Jessi Griffith; 10 great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, to include Charles Bolin and Cathey Rickman, who often visited Mrs Woods and brought fish and other gifts. The family would like to thank all of the staff and special frinds at Nightingale at Crossett Senior Living Center for all the love and special care shown to our mother. Graveside services are 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 21, 2024, in the Old Union Cemetery with Bro. Clayton Hales officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Alice Galbraith Williams, 94, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024. She was born on December 28, 1929, at Calion, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Dick Williams; parents, Jess and Hazel Galbraith; brothers, Bill Galbraith and Jesse B. Galbraith; and son-in-law, Robert M. Jenkins. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sports, traveling, and gardening. Alice was a long-time active member of the First United Methodist Church having served on many committees of the Church. She taught a couple’s class for many years and was active in the United Methodist Women organization. Alice is survived by her daughter, Lynne Jenkins; son, Richard Williams and wife, Becky; granddaughters, Emily Smith (Scott), Maddie Boyles (Landon); great-grandsons, Gray and Mac Wooley; numerous nieces and nephews.
